Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a digital representation based on three-dimensional data that integrates various engineering data models related to construction projects. It captures the physical and functional characteristics of project facilities, serving as an information carrier focused on virtual design and construction—essentially visual design and building processes. Since BIM was introduced in 2002, researchers worldwide have conducted extensive studies to advance its development.

BIM offers professionals a platform to access and share information in real-time, enabling collaboration throughout every stage of a building’s lifecycle. The BIM resource library is categorized into 3D, 4D, 5D, and 6D models:
- BIM 3D includes virtual modeling of buildings, site conditions, simulations, prefabrication of building systems, and collision detection.
- BIM 4D adds the dimension of time, supporting construction planning and project progress visualization.
- BIM 5D integrates quantity takeoff and real-time cost estimation.
- BIM 6D encompasses all information generated during the construction delivery process.
BIM software is crucial for implementing BIM applications and expressing its theoretical framework clearly. Without such software, adopting BIM standards would be challenging. Currently, the main international BIM platforms include AutoDesk, Bentley, Dassault, and Tekla.
The AutoDesk platform offers multiple software products including Revit, Infraworks, Navisworks, and Civil3D. These tools are primarily used in architecture, structural engineering, and equipment design, with widespread application in building construction as well as bridge engineering.
Bentley’s software suite is commonly applied in industrial design sectors such as electricity, petroleum, chemical, and pharmaceuticals, along with infrastructure projects like municipal works, roads, water conservancy, and bridges.
The Dassault portfolio includes products like SolidWorks, CATIA, and 3DVIA. These tools support 3D modeling, collaboration, intelligent information management, and simulation, mainly serving the business aircraft industry.
