To achieve sustainable development in the construction industry, it is essential to reform the current project management system. Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology offers a valuable opportunity for this transformation, and integrating BIM with traditional project management has become an inevitable trend in the industry’s evolution.

(1) The traditional extensive management methods and production approaches are key contributors to the construction industry’s overall low profitability. Currently, with the rapid growth of China’s construction sector, its economic significance and scale have become increasingly prominent. However, the industry’s profit margin remains under 3%, significantly lower than the average for domestic industrial sectors. This is mainly due to factors such as overcapacity, unfair and aggressive competition among companies, a loosely regulated market environment, and the widespread use of price-cutting bidding strategies that drive down profits.
Nonetheless, the core issue lies in the industry’s outdated, extensive, and inefficient management models. Therefore, it is urgent to upgrade the project management system, improve refined management practices, and ultimately transform the industry’s management approach.
(2) The advent of BIM technology presents a valuable opportunity to advance and reform project management in construction. Many scholars and industry experts agree that BIM is the optimal tool to enhance existing project management methods and raise the level of information technology adoption within the sector. Moreover, recent survey data from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development highlights that using BIM for refined management is a key benefit of its application.
Overall, the emergence and implementation of BIM technology can greatly facilitate the transformation and upgrading of project management practices, playing a significant role in driving the development of the entire construction industry.
(3) The advantages and value of BIM technology have gained widespread recognition from government bodies, academia, and industry professionals alike. In recent years, multiple levels of government in China have introduced various BIM standards and policies, contributing to the rapid development and adoption of BIM across the country.
