According to the National BIM Standard (NBIMS) of the United States, Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology encompasses all dimensions of project data. It enables authorized managers to input, modify, and extract BIM information efficiently. The key characteristics of BIM technology in construction engineering are integration, compatibility, and accuracy.

(1) Integration

The BIM model integrates diverse project information through parameterized data. Temporally, it covers the entire project lifecycle—from initial planning, design, and construction phases to project completion and acceptance. Spatially, BIM technology combines data related to the construction environment, main structure, as well as the specifications and locations of each project component.

From a stakeholder perspective, BIM incorporates engineering details provided and required by various participants such as owners, contractors, construction teams, and design units. Additionally, it includes management information like project investment, schedule progress, and safety.

This integrated approach ensures that the diverse information needs of all parties are met, improving their understanding of project tasks, reducing engineering changes, and enhancing construction management efficiency.

(2) Accuracy

The BIM model for urban rail transit projects simulates the actual state of the construction using detailed data. It accurately represents the real-time status of the project and its components through both geometric and non-geometric information.

Geometric information includes shapes, specifications, positional coordinates, and spatial relationships of various project elements. Non-geometric information covers attributes such as materials, weight, cost, and color.

By varying the level of detail in both geometric and non-geometric data, BIM models can be tailored to meet the precise accuracy requirements of different users, preventing issues like missing or redundant information.

(3) Compatibility

BIM data compatibility is demonstrated by its ability to directly read data from most current construction management software. After organizing the information, BIM can export data formats tailored to the software needs of all project participants.

Interoperability between different applications relies on public standards. When supported by these standards—such as the internationally recognized IFC data format—data exchange between software platforms becomes seamless. However, the software itself must support these standard formats, which requires industry-wide and international acceptance of such standards.
