The full name of BIM is Building Information Modeling. Since the advent of CAD technology in the 1960s, computer technology in the construction industry has experienced significant advancements. While CAD primarily focuses on two-dimensional drawings, BIM technology has elevated engineering practices by emphasizing three-dimensional modeling, offering a more intuitive and visual approach.

Extensive research by scholars on BIM applications demonstrates that BIM technology collects comprehensive project information to assist project managers in various tasks, including scheme evaluation, personnel organization, multi-party collaboration, and overall project control. This holistic approach makes project management more efficient, higher in quality, and standardized. Importantly, BIM is not a single software but a platform for resource sharing. As BIM technology continues to evolve, different BIM software tools can be employed at various project stages to address specific challenges.
Among the available BIM software, Autodesk has leveraged the strengths of its traditional drawing software, AutoCAD, to dominate the market and maintain a leading industry position. Currently, Autodesk Revit is the most widely used BIM software in China.
Software Features: The Revit platform is composed of three main modules: Architecture, Structure, and MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing). It offers a user-friendly interface and strong openness. Key features include volume modeling, vertical and horizontal sectioning, 3D multi-window display, support for multiple file formats, and compatibility with third-party plugins such as Olive Mountain Quick Model, Guangxia, Family Library Master, and PDST. Revit supports seamless data exchange with other Autodesk software like 3ds Max, Navisworks, and Robot, as well as with structural analysis programs including Tekla, SAP2000, ETABS, and YJK. This versatility makes the software applicable across a wide range of projects.
Limitations: Revit is primarily designed for civil building projects. Creating the necessary family files for modeling requires accumulation of project experience over time, which can increase the cost and learning curve, especially for smaller companies.
