How should we understand BIM? This article is not intended to preach about BIM. Many experts already know, understand, and apply it effectively, so I won’t try to reinvent the wheel. Instead, I want to share my personal perspective on BIM, exchange ideas, and learn together.
From my point of view, BIM is a process that involves researching data, generating information, physically representing, and managing the functional characteristics of a facility. It offers valuable insights that help plan, design, build, and manage buildings and infrastructure more efficiently.
BIM represents a new way of working.
BIM enables professionals in architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) to use consistent methods across building and infrastructure projects. It promotes a fresh approach: designing with intelligent objects. Regardless of how many design changes occur or who makes them, BIM ensures consistency, coordination, and clearer communication of data among all project stakeholders.
BIM supports more efficient collaborative workflows.
Cross-departmental teams in the building and infrastructure industries rely on BIM-based collaborative processes that significantly enhance their ability to make smarter decisions faster. These workflows provide clearer visualizations for all stakeholders, allowing for better, more informed, and timely decision-making throughout the project lifecycle.
BIM enables the creation of smart models.
With BIM software, the models created are intelligent. They integrate project-related data and automatically generate information within the model. The components understand how to function and interact with each other. Moreover, the model can demonstrate what each stakeholder should do, how to do it, and to what extent, ensuring everyone has a clear understanding of the project process.
These points reflect my own thoughts on understanding BIM. They represent personal insights and do not speak for any individual or organization. I encourage everyone to share their views and participate in open dialogue.
