“Half of architecture relies on thought, while the other half originates from existence and spirit.” – Tadao Ando

The spirit of a place is just as vital as its practical purpose when it comes to an art center. It not only reflects the cultural and artistic development of its era but also stands as a landmark in the city’s journey toward internationalization. The creators of Nest Art Center envision it as a city symbol that harmoniously blends internal and external elements, unlocking infinite spatial possibilities through the power of “beauty.”

Today, we view beauty as a form of productivity, with irreplaceable competitiveness as a core component. Within the ambitious and visionary city of Shenzhen, the “beauty” embodied by the Chao Art Center holds a unique significance, empowering it to confidently advance with the times.

Why choose Mu’s for the architectural design?

At the outset, Nest Art Center’s design drew inspiration from the artistic development histories of various Greater Bay Areas worldwide, elevating its architectural, interior, and functional concepts to an international standard. Thus, it transcends the role of a mere art center, becoming a reflection of the contemporary era.

“Incorporating organic elements into vertical architecture helps create a symbiotic atmosphere between the building and its natural environment.” – Ramesh Subramaniam, Director @ M Moser Associates

Hence, we selected M Moser Associates (China branch), based in the United States and recognized for designing Google buildings, PayPal offices, Alibaba, and Tencent headquarters, to infuse cutting-edge innovation into the interior spaces. Within the ecological context of Qiaochengfang, a sense of technology, futurism, and style permeates the building, interiors, and the broader cultural environment.

2. The “Egg” Emerging from the Cocoon

Architectural innovation goes beyond form; it involves rethinking internal behavioral logic. This approach cultivates new aesthetic values and concepts, allowing architecture to truly express its artistic essence.

The elliptical glass structure, often called “an egg emerging from its cocoon,” establishes a unique, interconnected relationship with Qiaochengfang. It creates a space marked by openness, innovation, freedom, and unconventional ideas. The egg-shaped form aligns with the building’s functions, serving as a versatile area for corporate press conferences, roadshows, and cocktail parties. It provides a platform for enterprises to find their voice and act as a true incubator for growth.

Inside, soft white lines create a smooth, romantic ambiance. This blend of rationality and softness embodies the essence of Nest Art Center—a city landmark that harmonizes interior and exterior elements and promises enduring vitality.

The name “Nest” symbolizes rebirth, hope, and vitality. By seamlessly blending art, architecture, and ecology, the project reflects the unique spirit of this emerging city. The technologically infused atmosphere aims to establish a world-class art space, becoming a cultural hub for humanistic art in Shenzhen.

The interior’s white grid-like structure layers and expands continuously, forming an ordered and ceremonial presence. This design not only delivers a striking visual impact but also conveys cultural meaning, showcasing a rational and scientific spirit.

If architecture is art, then light is indispensable. It flows through the building’s form, shaping the rhythm of the space. The glass curtain wall and pristine white steel framework enhance transparency, allowing natural light to sculpt the building’s dimensions gracefully. This creates the aesthetic identity of the Nest Art Center, making it a distinctive landmark in Shenzhen.

3. Functional Design: Measuring Art by Scale

The spatial structure guides its function. Though primarily an art center, the creators envisioned it as a versatile promotional and interactive platform.

The building’s highly iconic exterior sets a powerful visual tone, while the interior contrasts with a simple, flexible atmosphere. Designed to be neutral, the interior offers adaptable spaces—from art exhibitions to private events—providing room for diverse activities, multiple ambiances, and opportunities for enterprise collaboration. The future is full of possibilities.

As a premier international event venue, Nest Art Center has hosted a range of exhibitions and events: RON English, the father of contemporary street art; Tonino Lamborghini’s new product launch; Rolls Royce VIP tasting events; TEDx2021 Annual Conference; and artist Yan Lei’s cross-disciplinary exhibition “Colorful Wheel Carnival.” From the stage, one can see Shenzhen’s stunning skyline beyond the glass curtain wall, where the space seems to merge with the blue sky and sunlight, creating an atmosphere of relaxation and joy—truly capturing the harmony between people, architecture, and the environment.

The main venue is situated on the upper floor, with the lower floor dedicated to business meetings and leisure. The bar leads to a secluded path that gradually opens into a peaceful, distant space. It connects with Spanish old boat wood and moss plants, creating a serene urban garden. Dynamic curves in the ellipsoidal surfaces showcase geometric beauty, while the reception, coffee shop, and activity areas blend practicality with architectural artistry. Wooden blinds link the interior with the courtyard, inviting warm natural light inside.

Wooden blinds connect seamlessly to the external courtyard, bathing the interior in warm natural light. On the second floor, wooden steps wrap the floor, harmonizing with the elliptical wooden entrance. The 1200-square-meter main hall is column-free, accommodating up to 500 guests. The lower walls feature 3D-printed wooden veneer on metal surfaces, combining delicate textures with metallic contrasts that enhance spatial hierarchy and tactile richness. Viewed from afar, the space resembles a large-scale art installation, enriching the artistic atmosphere.

4. A Flowing Feast

Departing from traditional wood and ceramic floors typical of art spaces, Nest Art Center introduces artificial turf to bring nature indoors, complementing Qiaochengfang Green Park and elevating beauty to a new dimension. This blend of natural landscape and artistic expression creates a true masterpiece.

Indoor greenery enlivens the space, with sunlight filtering through layers of white framing that meanders fluidly—giving the impression that, while man-made, it appears to bloom from the sky. The ‘inner courtyard garden’ offers a rich cultural ambiance, where shadows of plants dance on Zen white sand, and time slows to a gentle pace.

Architect Gaudi once said, “Straight lines belong to humanity, while curves belong to God.” The beauty of curves most closely mirrors nature and is incomparable. Curves traverse the space with maximum tension. The reception desk anchors the lower level with a cylindrical shape that captures attention, while scattered pillar systems double as luminous film lighting fixtures. Ribbon-shaped fluorescent lamp slots embedded in the ceiling weave between pillars, outlining dynamic curves throughout.

5. Developer’s Perspective

Shenzhen is China’s youngest first-tier city, evolving into an international metropolis through continuous exploration and innovation. The Nest Art Center embodies this spirit with its forward-looking vision and vibrant vitality. It constantly challenges established norms, forging connections between people, nature, and architecture. More than just an art center, it is a dynamic urban landmark.

The Nest Art Center shines with brightness and transparency from every angle, seamlessly integrating with its surroundings. In our view, beauty equals productivity. This encompasses not only form and materials but also the comfort it offers and the spirit and emotions it conveys. Only buildings embodying these qualities hold true meaning and represent comprehensive, thoughtful design. Without substance, aesthetics remain lifeless.

Design is a highly systematic process. From a business standpoint, it should create commercial value; artistically, it should foster humanistic value; and personally, it should enrich individual experience. Only through the collaborative efforts of developers and designers can a masterpiece that transcends time come to life.
