The Unified Standard for Building Information Modeling Applications (hereinafter referred to as the “Standard”) has been officially approved as a national standard under the number GB/T51212-2016 and came into effect on July 1, 2017.
This Standard was developed by the China Academy of Building Research in collaboration with relevant organizations, following the directives outlined in the Notice on Issuing the Revised Plan for the Development of Engineering Construction Standards and Specifications in 2012, issued by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (Document No. AI_S_SC0_5).
The Standard Review Committee, consisting of ten industry experts including Mao Zhibing and Wang Dan, affirmed that the Standard thoroughly addresses China’s national conditions and the current characteristics of the engineering construction industry. It introduces an innovative and practical approach to implementing Building Information Modeling (BIM) in China, known as P-BIM. The content is scientific, well-structured, foundational, and pioneering, playing a crucial role in guiding the promotion and development of BIM across the country.
To facilitate the research and development of the Standard, the China Academy of Building Research, the Shanghai Academy of Building Research (Group) Co., Ltd., and other contributing organizations established the National Building Information Modeling (BIM) Industry Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance, also known as the China BIM Development Alliance.
The China BIM Development Alliance has led a comprehensive BIM standards research project in China. This project comprises one major research initiative, three research themes, 29 subtopics, and two fundamental research subjects. As of January 2015, the project has produced 56 research reports, developed or modified 40 software applications, secured 23 software copyrights, published 54 academic papers, filed 5 patent applications, and compiled 134 engineering case studies. These efforts have yielded significant achievements.
Moreover, a total of 21 BIM-related standards have been developed under the Chinese Engineering Construction Association series. These standards were primarily drafted by the teams responsible for the Standard and members of the China BIM Development Alliance. Several BIM standards are currently finalized and will soon be released by the China Association for Engineering Construction Standardization, providing further technical support for the implementation and adoption of BIM practices.
The drafting unit of the Standard has pioneered the creation of an industry alliance that collaborates with various stakeholders to conduct basic research and support standard development. This innovative model for research and standard formulation has received high praise from leaders within the Standard Quota Department of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.
As the first engineering construction standard for BIM application in China, the Standard establishes the fundamental requirements for using Building Information Modeling. It serves as the foundational guideline for BIM application and forms the basis for developing related standards nationwide.
Recently, the State Council issued the 13th Five-Year Plan for National Informatization. The implementation of this Standard will lay a solid foundation for enhancing the informatization capabilities of China’s construction industry.
