Above the Rainbow is a striking rooftop public space renovation inspired by the vibrant colors of a rainbow. Located in Changsha—the largest city in Hunan province—this project forms an integral part of a larger commercial building renovation.
The renovation transforms the rooftop into a trendy and engaging outdoor social hub. It serves as a popular gathering and leisure spot where visitors can admire panoramic views of the Xiangjiang River. The space primarily caters to young people and families visiting Changsha Joy City in the Kaifu District for sightseeing and shopping.
Inspired by the arc shape of the rooftop, the designers applied parallel bands of colorful ribbons across the ground, enhancing the visual impact of the curve and creating a magnificent rainbow effect. Each ribbon is assigned a unique color and function, encouraging social interaction through a variety of leisure activities.
These ribbons act as two-dimensional patterns on the streamlined floor to guide visitor movement, while also transforming into three-dimensional urban furniture, play areas, and seating installations on elevated sections of the roof.
Within this ribbon system, some bands rise from the ground to form an open-air amphitheater, maximizing the stunning views of the Xiang River. Others extend vertically into capsule-shaped structures that attract visitors with their playful forms and patterns, providing perfect spots for selfies and social media sharing.
The amphitheater also features the project’s most iconic installation—the “I ♡ Changsha” sign—serving as a distinctive and recognizable landmark within the rooftop space.
To amplify the rooftop’s entertainment value, a set of spiral slides have been installed, connecting the 6th-floor roof to the 5th-floor terrace, with a height difference of 12 meters—offering thrilling fun for visitors of all ages.
In conclusion, this roof renovation has successfully enhanced the sensory experience for visitors, creating a vibrant and dynamic social hub atop Changsha Beichen Delta Joy City Shopping Center.
