Code Domain is a 10,000-square-meter urban landscape project surrounding the Hangzhou Hanghuang Community Future City Experience Center. It is located in Hangzhou, the capital and largest city of Zhejiang Province, China.
The Hanghuang Future Community Demonstration Zone Experience Center serves as a showcase that integrates intelligent technology into urban functional units. It is part of the new technology center in Hangzhou’s Fuyang District, home to many leading companies in China’s tech industry.
Our objective was to extend this unique technological theme into the surrounding landscape by incorporating binary code motifs in black and white or full spatial forms. These patterns appear across the landscape, sidewalks, and greenery, making the pavement and planting designs resemble binary code. Layered on top are vibrant, dynamic activities, transforming the area into a social interaction hub.
Inspired by the modular design of the main building, we created a virtual grid system to organize geometric landscape elements at varying scales—from small grass patches, through medium-sized geometric shrub arrangements, to larger platforms designed for education and entertainment, as well as urban furniture and activity spaces.
Throughout the landscape, we positioned several key focal points designed as rest areas and gathering spots, complemented by educational, leisure, and entertainment facilities. These include a circular plaza at the pedestrian entrance serving as a welcoming gathering point for visitors; a robot-themed amusement park adjacent to the observation deck for children; four mini plazas forming the core educational and activity zone near the main thoroughfare; and a tranquil coding garden nestled between buildings, offering a peaceful retreat for both workers and visitors.
In summary, the landscape design enhances and enriches the visitor experience, setting the tone even before entering the Experience Center.
