Driving through the mountain mist and entering the lush green fields, the village softly emerges through the light haze. Nestled on the hillside, white-walled houses with gray tile roofs blend harmoniously into the verdant landscape, their presence quietly radiant. This is Manshe Shanju Boutique Homestay Hotel, peacefully situated in the tranquil mountain village of Panboshi, Dazhuangke Township, Yanqing District, Beijing.

The homestay’s courtyard is a serene haven, beautifully integrated into the surrounding greenery.

The original site was a typical northern three-courtyard house. After thoughtful renovation, the aged structure now reflects the aesthetics of mountain dwellings, creating a living space that seamlessly blends traditional residential charm with modern comfort. Removed from the city’s clamor, guests here can truly embrace nature’s gifts and experience the subtle serenity evoked by Tao Yuanming’s poetic vision of “leisurely viewing the southern mountains.”

During renovation, key challenges included creating rich spatial layers within a compact volume, precisely balancing the scale of each area, and harmoniously integrating the building with its natural surroundings.

Two original hawthorn trees on the site were carefully preserved to maintain the location’s natural character.

The core concept behind Manshe Shanju has guided the design from the start. It embraces quietness and peace, yet also the warmth and liveliness reminiscent of a true home.
Manshe Shanju is more than a boutique homestay; it is a healing sanctuary tucked away in the mountains — a place for reunion after long separations. Here, one can glimpse the moon through drifting clouds and find simplicity amidst complexity. This simplicity becomes all the more captivating against the backdrop of the lush mountain fields. Like a cup of clear tea, it may seem plain at first, but with careful savoring, the sweetness of life reveals itself.

The three buildings, adorned with white walls and gray tiles, stand independently yet complement each other. Together with the two preserved hawthorn trees in the courtyard, they form a harmonious and welcoming composition. The courtyard serves as the heart of this home and a transitional space bridging pure rural life and comfortable living. Its fluid circulation quietly reflects the relaxed lifestyle of those retreating to nature.

The multifunctional water bar area seamlessly combines self-service dining, meetings, and social entertainment.

The open layout and design techniques continuously embrace the stunning mountain scenery. Floor-to-ceiling windows invite natural views into the interior, layer by layer. Ascending the outdoor viewing platform via the courtyard’s rear staircase offers a panoramic vista of the surrounding mountains. At sunset, the mountains, draped in mist, seem to lean toward the small courtyard. This mutual gaze between architecture and nature narrates a tranquil dialogue in the valley.

Under the setting sun, Manshe Mountain Residence radiates a soft, hazy beauty.

From bustling prosperity to wild nature, from frantic pace to leisurely calm — these transitions mirror shifts in mindset. The calming energy of this “home” gradually eases life’s stresses. Visitors who stay here leave with cherished memories, weaving new stories into the fabric of this place.

This site not only witnesses the changing seasons of nature but also records the lives of diverse people across time. The connection between people and scenery gradually transforms into a warm emotion, permeating every corner. Every glance at this courtyard reveals new surprises and feelings, making it endlessly captivating.

The interior continues the cozy, warm style of the mountain residence courtyard. It preserves the simple color palette and original wooden beam structures, maintaining an elegant and relaxed atmosphere throughout.

The overall indoor ambiance is bright and inviting, unfolding a gentle dialogue between architecture and nature—a story of space and life. It blends warmth with tranquility, roughness with refinement, and natural elements with human touch. This is a place for friends to chat, parents to watch over their children, and for kids to play freely in the shade and mountains, growing up embraced by nature. Here, life slows down, allowing visitors to savor its true essence. This is the beauty of Manshe Mountain Residence.
