Editor’s Note: This project involves the renovation of an old building by Taiwanese firm CYS.ASDO. By adding new construction, the team transformed an abandoned traditional courtyard into a reception center. The design emphasizes the striking contrast between the old and new structures, creating a dynamic dialogue between different eras.

The 99-year-old abandoned courtyard on the site was scheduled for demolition to make way for a new residential project.

Before the new residential development began, we were commissioned to design a temporary reception center.

We chose to preserve the courtyard as part of the reception center’s spatial design experiment. This also served as a farewell exhibition honoring the 99-year-old house.

The rear of the old house is enclosed by a new design, creating a fresh courtyard with flowing corridors that seamlessly integrate the weathered walls and surrounding vegetation.

Windows and glass frames offer views into the old courtyard, turning it into an art installation within the new space that evokes memories of the past.

A model unit for the upcoming residential project occupies the original courtyard. This white volume connects to a glass corridor, bridging the old and new, the past and present.

The interaction between old and new elements throughout the project has generated many fascinating perspectives and opportunities for exploration.

The spatial relationship between past and present feels intimate, yet there is always room for imagination in the transition between the two. Now, it is time to say goodbye to the old and welcome the new.

Attachment: The triple courtyard is a traditional residential style, where three sides of the courtyard form an inverted U-shape.
