Heatherwick Studio has unveiled their latest residential project: twin towers in Vancouver, Canada. Designed for Kingswood and Bosa Properties, these “curvaceous” towers are situated on the city’s western edge. Inspired by the natural form of trees, the two towers gracefully curve upward from the ground, aiming to set a new benchmark in world-class architectural design. Standing between 30 and 34 floors tall, these towers offer residents stunning panoramic views of the entire city and Vancouver Harbour.

The development will comprise 401 apartments, replacing two apartment buildings originally constructed in the mid-1980s. Early design plans incorporate materials such as concrete, wood, glass, and glazed copper panels. Both towers will be connected by a shared five-story podium that houses amenities including shops and restaurants.

Heatherwick Studio explains, “Large, flat buildings often lack a positive emotional connection for people. Our curved design breaks down the scale of the building to a more human level, vertically dividing long facades into distinct sections. This adds variety at street level and enhances the overall experience.” The residential units will range from studios to one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments. Lower-floor units will feature built-in terraces and flower beds, integrating greenery into living spaces.

They continue, “Towers are often monolithic structures that seem disconnected from the street, a common sight in Vancouver’s western end. Our goal is to create towers that engage with the ground level on a human scale, fostering community interaction and establishing a lively social hub for residents and visitors alike. We design the towers starting from the ground up, which allows us to explore possibilities such as carving out spaces at the tower’s base to create active social areas.”
