This residence, located in Volyagmene, a seaside suburb of Athens, Greece, was designed by 314 Architecture Studio. The innovative design is inspired by a butterfly shape, featuring a series of organic curves that create a unique residential complex. It consists of four independent units, each with a basement and a top floor.

The design by 314 Architecture Studio draws inspiration from the butterfly’s wings, which extend from the residential areas toward the garden. These wing-shaped structures provide shade to the lower level while forming open terraces on the upper level, offering residents uninterrupted views of the sea. Additionally, the curved shape of the wings helps to maintain privacy.

In the ‘Butterfly’ residence, transparent walls serve to blur the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces. U-shaped glass replaces solid walls and is widely incorporated throughout the buildings. This design choice maximizes natural light indoors while refracting light and shadow to soften the visibility of residents’ activities, thereby enhancing privacy and creating a unique atmosphere.

The combination of materials enhances the interaction between residents and the structure. The glossy U-shaped glass contrasts beautifully with the matte white cement used for walls, floors, and ceilings. Additionally, natural stones placed around the property introduce an earthy element. Larger rocks cleverly conceal structural components and glass storage panels, maintaining only the visually essential elements.

The harmony between the surrounding landscape and the architectural form is striking. An artificial lake mirrors the organic shapes of the butterfly wings, glass surfaces, and vegetation, creating a peaceful sense of isolation. A floating pathway crosses the lake and plantings, connecting to a balcony on one level and providing a natural, immersive route for residents.
