Spacecraft are more than just vehicles for space travel. In the near future, they may evolve into entire cities, expanding endlessly and serving as the Noah’s Ark that ushers in a new civilization for humanity.

— Liu Haowei

Crystal Space City is a new project designed by Liu Haowei as the inaugural creation for the global “Le Zao Xin Shi” creative assembly relay event, in collaboration with LEGO China.

Originating in Denmark in 1932, LEGO has grown over 88 years into the world’s most recognized and valued building toy brand. LEGO appeals not only to children but also to adults, offering virtually anything one can imagine. Through partnerships with powerful intellectual properties, LEGO has expanded into movies, TV shows, technology, cities, architecture, characters, and more. What seem like simple LEGO bricks come together to create infinite possibilities through collaborative building.

Liu Haowei notes that LEGO toys embody a strong architectural concept: small cubic modules that can build structures, cities, or even entire planets. This process resembles cellular growth and reproduction, gradually forming living organisms and communities. The Crystal Space City draws from this idea, constructing a futuristic city inspired by original LEGO spacecraft and modeled on the principles of crystal growth.

Space exploration remains a cutting-edge and captivating topic. Notably, China’s Chang’e-5 spacecraft successfully launched on November 24th, with its lunar lander igniting on December 3rd, marking China’s first extraterrestrial takeoff. These milestones are pivotal steps toward humanity’s migration to new “Earths” and deeper space exploration. Advances in aerospace technology enable spacecraft launches and open possibilities for exploring, developing, and utilizing celestial bodies beyond Earth. Each new discovery reshapes our understanding of the universe.

Liu Haowei and his firm, CAA Architecture, embrace the philosophy of “Design for Tomorrow,” continually conceptualizing future cities and living spaces alongside urban development. This vision aligns perfectly with LEGO Group’s mission to “inspire and nurture future builders.”

Crystal Space City is envisioned as a city nurtured and grown within the universe. Its core device is a spacecraft at the base, topped by a micro-city data module lens seed, implanted under an artificial gravity field controlled by AI. Through artificial intelligence, a defined data sequence enables the city to multiply and grow infinitely, eventually forming a massive futuristic space city. The spacecraft serves as the essential carrier, providing energy and propulsion to transport the city into space, enabling human habitation on the Moon, Mars, the Milky Way, and beyond.

Einstein’s mass-energy equivalence equation, E=mc², reveals the inseparable relationship between mass and energy. This super-strong energy crystal is managed by AI within a vast cosmic petri dish, using intense gravitational accretion to capture ambient energy for its own use. It follows predetermined trajectories to grow material matrices, transforming energy into matter and creating an ideal world.

Crystal Space City is constructed from modular units that organically combine urban spaces, oases, and energy sources. Within its expanding ecosystem, emissions are recycled and converted into renewable resources. Through continuous self-regulation, it forms an adaptive, independent recycling system, enabling it to escape Earth’s confines and travel through space to any corner of the universe. It serves as a modern Noah’s Ark, carrying infinite vitality and hope.

When the physical world merges with virtual space, when concrete cities transform into organic lifeforms, and when humans truly transcend three-dimensional space to enter a multidimensional universe, Crystal Space City could become the ideal habitat for humanity. It represents a hybrid lifeform, nurtured to freely navigate the universe and pioneer a brand-new urban civilization.
