Background
The Hangcheng Community Health Service Center is located at the intersection of Kaicheng 2nd Road and Taoyuan Road in Huangtian Community, Xixiang Street, Bao’an District, Shenzhen. The existing building, covering approximately 4,000 square meters with floor heights of 3.9 meters from the first to fourth floors and an accessible roof, has become outdated and presents safety concerns.
1. What type of project is this? What was the purpose of the renovation? What social and market needs does it address?
The renovation of the Hangcheng Community Health Service Center represents a response to the evolving demands of the times. The project adapts the building’s functions and exterior to meet current and future functional and aesthetic requirements. The primary goal is to upgrade public and service spaces, increase green and ecological areas, and transform the center into an international, standardized, and eco-friendly health facility, all while preserving the building’s main structure. The renovation aims to revitalize the Bao’an Xixiang Community Health Service Center by reshaping spatial functions, reinforcing the structure, and upgrading equipment.

2. What challenges did the project face, what were the renovation strategies, and what key difficulties arose?
After thorough inspections and on-site assessments, the main issues identified in the community center included:
- The main entrance faces a busy municipal road, creating safety risks due to high traffic;
- The outdoor ground level is higher than the indoor floor level, increasing the risk of rainwater intrusion;
- Fire damage previously required reinforcement work, resulting in reduced clearance under some beams;
- Exposed outdoor air conditioning units negatively affect the building’s appearance.
To address these concerns, the design team developed a comprehensive renovation strategy focusing on architecture, structural reinforcement, and building systems.

△ Renovation design plan
The architect’s key renovation strategies are as follows:
- Relocate the main entrance to the east side and create an entrance plaza that serves as a buffer from the busy road;
- Break from the traditional community health center design by introducing public spaces that foster neighborly interaction and a relaxed atmosphere. The first through fourth floors are designed as layered, stepped interior public spaces to enhance spatial experience and activate the building;
- Upgrade evacuation routes by adding a medical elevator and renovating stairs to meet clearance requirements;
- Externally express indoor public spaces and establish standardized building modules based on function while incorporating natural lighting and ventilation. The façade features rhythmic window openings and large glass panels that combine with public spaces on each floor to create bright, transparent, and vibrant environments. The interior reflects a soft, natural architectural identity;
- Functionally organize spaces based on the public areas on each floor, accommodating medical staff, patients, and waste management effectively;
- Structurally reinforce columns and beams to meet current standards using cross-section enlargement and lightweight methods such as carbon fiber wrapping. Foundation beams are added to unify and strengthen the foundation. Post-reinforcement monitoring showed no uneven settlement or deformation. Note that beam clearance may be lower due to medical equipment, piping, and increased ceiling heights;
- Utilize BIM technology for comprehensive pipeline layout to avoid conflicts and improve coordination.

This renovation project comprehensively transforms the building’s structure, function, exterior facade, and mechanical and electrical systems. Through this design and construction, the old building has been given a new lease on life. As urban renewal continues, we anticipate many similar projects ahead, each bringing fresh vitality to the city.
