The “Gathering and Separation” installations, designed by Behin Ha, are situated at two venues in Denmark to support the 2020 Trekanfest event in the Danish Triangle. This project follows Behin Ha’s 2019 installation “Coshodon Ray Trace” in Ohio. Installed at the end of August, these devices serve as dynamic spaces for performances and gatherings during the festival.

Each structure consists of nearly 400 woven mesh straps, coated and stretched from the ground to the roof’s edge. At the ground contact points, the undulating ribbons curve inward, creating a series of cellular, pore-like spaces. While the ribbons separate these spaces, the pores allow visual connections between them. This interplay between linear roof anchoring and curved ground anchoring results in varying density, transparency, and complex visual layering. The installation’s bright orange color creates a striking focal point that invites curiosity and interaction.

The installation was constructed by a volunteer team led by the owner alongside a professional construction crew. The assembly process was designed to be simple, allowing community volunteers to participate. Once the roof and ground anchor points were secured, the coated mesh webbing was stretched taut between the designated anchors and nailed in place. The twisting of the webbing, caused by differing anchor orientations, makes the device appear more transparent when viewed horizontally but more blurred from above.

This design reflects Behin Ha’s contemplation of social gatherings during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. Addressing the tension between people’s desire to come together and the epidemiological need for isolation, the device creates multiple interconnected yet separated spaces that symbolize this complex relationship.
