Exploring Successful BIM Workflow Models

The application of BIM (Building Information Modeling) in the domestic market is becoming increasingly widespread, with many companies actively exploring and implementing it. While numerous challenges have been identified during BIM adoption, many enterprises have made significant improvements and achieved positive results. For some, developing BIM workflows has become an essential strategy to enhance overall business processes.

When using BIM software for design work, users generate a 3D model enriched with numerous parameters and attributes. Although many 3D modeling tools exist in the market, they differ significantly from BIM. Typically, 3D modeling software converts original design data into a three-dimensional model after the design phase is complete.

In contrast, BIM offers designers an integrated 3D design approach, effectively allowing the design process to take place within a digital environment. Once the 3D model is established, the design is finalized, and quantity take-offs are automatically completed. Each building component’s information is clearly defined within the model, so selecting any element provides detailed data instantly.

Beyond design, BIM’s primary strength lies in facilitating collaboration among professional teams using a shared model. Traditionally, each team receives drawings and materials from the previous team to perform their tasks. However, complex projects involving multiple teams often face communication and integration challenges. Teams must coordinate individually with others, making it difficult to manage document revisions and communication efficiently.

BIM significantly addresses these issues by enabling all teams to work on the same digital model for analysis and design. Each team focuses on their specific tasks within the model, while all changes and updates become visible to other teams in real-time. This approach streamlines communication, reduces the need for repetitive documentation exchanges, and enhances overall coordination and productivity.

To help readers better understand BIM’s working model, the author has included an illustration from a BIM expert in Taiwan, China. This image clearly demonstrates how BIM transforms traditional workflows.
