Located on the outskirts of Sri Lanka, this house was designed for a young couple seeking a quiet retreat away from their busy work schedules. With a limited budget, they commissioned architect Chathurika Kulasinghe to create a private residence in Hokandara, a suburb of Colombo. Positioned at a dead-end street, the project is aptly named the “Dead End” residence. Its curved form harmonizes with the rounded corners of the adjacent street, blending seamlessly with the surrounding environment.

Chathurika Kulasinghe emphasizes creating a positive spatial experience throughout the home, responding thoughtfully to the unique site layout. The house is designed inward-facing, with its back toward the street. Exposed brick walls enclose a garden area that houses the living and dining rooms. On both sides of the garden, flat-roofed structures are nestled among lush local plants, providing a natural shelter.

Inside, the first floor features a kitchen and a bedroom, both opening to an outdoor courtyard. A staircase leads to the upper level where the master bedroom is located. From the master bedroom, residents have access to an outdoor terrace surrounded by plants, which appears to float above the living space below. The use of rustic materials alongside abundant greenery enhances the vibrancy and warmth throughout the home.
