Sanjay Puri has completed a campus project in northern India, drawing inspiration from the natural and urban elements typical of the region. Located in Rajasthan—a region where temperatures often surpass 35°C (95°F)—the design thoughtfully integrates a mix of open and enclosed spaces to offer ample shade and reduce discomfort from the heat. Additionally, all classrooms are oriented to face north, preventing direct sunlight from affecting teachers and students.

The campus is centered around a semi-shaded courtyard, connected by paths leading to various corners. A combination of linear, irregular quadrilateral frames and shading beams creates dynamic shadow patterns that evolve throughout the day as the sun moves, explains Sanjay Puri. The layout deliberately blends open landscapes with learning spaces, fostering a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor environments.

The auditorium, primary school, and administrative offices are positioned on the southern side of the site, while secondary school classrooms, the library, and the cafeteria occupy the opposite side of the courtyard. The entire school opens up to multifunctional sports and athletic fields located to the north. Throughout the design, angular hollow walls act as sunshade beams, minimizing solar heat gain from the east, west, and north and helping maintain a cool interior environment.

From an environmental standpoint, the campus’s electricity needs are fully met by surplus power generated from nearby cement plants. Additionally, all water used on-site is recycled. Reflecting the organic character of Rajasthan’s traditional towns, the campus features a casual layout that merges open and enclosed spaces. This design approach responds effectively to the region’s hot climate, resulting in a school that is both innovative and exploratory, according to Sanjay Puri.
