As the construction nears completion, the first images of the 2020 Dubai World Expo entrance gate, designed by Asif Khan, have been revealed. These three grand black gates will welcome millions of visitors from October 20, 2020, to April 10, 2021.

“The gates are the first sight visitors will encounter upon entering the site,” Asif Khan explained. “They serve as landmarks marking the beginning and end of the 2020 World Expo. I hope visitors, especially children, feel inspired by these unique structures and excited to experience the region’s heritage. Passing through these three gates symbolizes a journey from the past into the future.”

In designing the entrance gate, Asif Khan incorporated futuristic elements with traditional Arabic window grilles—intricate designs commonly used in the region to control sunlight and airflow. The black lace-like cubic structure creates mysterious dark gaps that allow light to pass through, revealing a vibrant mural beneath the blue sky. Simultaneously, it casts patterned shadows on the ground, offering an artistic and localized welcome to guests.

The three gates are constructed entirely from ultra-lightweight carbon fiber blended yarn, offering exceptional structural strength. This innovative material enables each gate to reach 21 meters in height and 30 meters in length without additional support. Each gate features two massive doors, each 21 meters tall and 10.5 meters wide, which open every morning during the Expo to welcome visitors worldwide. Positioned across three key zones—Opportunity, Mobility, and Sustainability—the gates usher guests toward lush courtyards filled with trees, also designed by Asif Khan.
