Sample Question for Level 3 (Building Equipment Design) of the National BIM Skill Level Examination

Exam Requirements:

  1. Exam format: computer-based, open book.
  2. Exam duration: 360 minutes total (240 minutes in the morning, 120 minutes in the afternoon).
  3. Create a new folder named with your admission ticket number and name to store all files generated during the exam. You must upload and submit the model and design results before the end of the morning session. Before the end of the afternoon session, submit a report file (format not specified; a PowerPoint with notes or embedded audio is recommended).

Test Sections:

  1. Using the provided building plan, project overview, and requirements, independently create building models and design mechanical and electrical equipment systems with BIM-related software. Save the results in your folder under the filename “Equipment Model + Candidate Name.xxx”.

Project Overview:

This project is located in Beijing on the first floor, which has a height of 4.2 meters and functions as a laboratory. The thermal transmittance (U-value) of the exterior wall is 0.56 W/(m·K), interior wall is 0.95 W/(m·K), roof is 0.49 W/(m·K), and the external wall and curtain wall have a U-value of 2.7 W/(m·K).

Design and Modeling Requirements:

  1. Create a building model including grids, walls, columns, doors, windows, floor slabs, and related components. The exterior wall thickness should be 300mm, and interior walls 200mm. Do not model outdoor sprinklers, stairs, indoor elevators, or staircases. The junctions between exterior walls and columns should be handled simply but with correct dimensions and positioning. (5 points)
  2. Calculate HVAC loads based on the building model and generate a load calculation report. (15 points)
  3. Design the air conditioning and heating systems based on the load calculations. The AC system should use a VRV multi-split system with fresh air mode, while the heating system uses radiator heating. Build models for the air conditioning air and water systems, fresh air system, and heating system. Note that condensate pipes must have a slope of no less than 5‰. (15 points)
  4. Create a bathroom water system model based on the bathroom layout, including drainage pipes with a slope of 8‰. Hot water is not considered. (10 points)
  5. Design and add switches, lighting fixtures, distribution boxes, and wiring based on the architectural layout, and establish a lighting system model. (10 points)
  6. Assign distinct colors to air ducts, water pipes, and cable trays according to their types for easy identification. (5 points)
  7. Perform clash detection to ensure no collisions occur among air ducts, water pipes, equipment, lighting fixtures, etc., and generate a clash detection report. (10 points)
  8. The report file should include but is not limited to:
    • Design description;
    • Overall BIM model with renderings or animated walkthroughs of key spaces;
    • Load calculation and clash detection reports;
    • Design diagrams for each system;
    • Other deliverables demonstrating the candidate’s proficiency in applying BIM technology to building equipment design, showcasing cleanliness, aesthetics, and a solid understanding of BIM core technologies and software skills.

    (30 points)

  9. All other unspecified aspects should be decided by the candidate.
