Uppsala University, located in Sweden, is the oldest university in the Nordic region, currently hosting 45,000 students. It offers an international environment conducive to world-class research and education. The Segerstedthuset administrative building, designed by the architecture firm 3XN, aims to enrich the campus by providing diverse learning and working spaces.
The new administrative building provides a modern workspace tailored for academic researchers and university administrators. It plays a vital role on campus as a visually striking meeting place. The ground floor houses a restaurant, which serves both students and faculty, while also welcoming the public during regular hours. This building activates the campus atmosphere and stands out as a prominent landmark within the city of Uppsala.
The architectural concept involves rotating and stacking two U-shaped blocks to create an open central atrium, with the overlapping sections housing offices. This design optimizes interior views and allows effective control of natural lighting. The architect also ensured harmony with the site’s historical context by integrating scattered smaller blocks and softening sharp corners, resulting in a dynamic, avant-garde structure that blends naturally with the sloping landscape.
During the design process, special attention was given to the building’s connection with public spaces. Three cohesive zones were established: the entrance area at the front, a central ground floor space for exhibitions and information, and an outdoor park with seating. These spaces aim to seamlessly link the campus with the surrounding city.
The restaurant on the ground floor is accessible to local visitors, while students and faculty enjoy easy access throughout the campus via this building.
