The Red Brick House is a 2,500 square foot farmhouse nestled in the rural settlement of Wada, near Mumbai, India. Surrounded by towering mountains and farmland, this building’s design leaves a strong impression, inviting visitors to explore its unique visual appeal. Its organic form, shaped directly on the ground, flows seamlessly into the village skyline, following the undulating curves of the landscape.

Each space within the house flows organically, connected by graceful curves that create a continuous courtyard environment. Visitors begin their journey along the curved brick walls, discovering captivating perspectives that draw them into a dreamlike interplay of light and shadow.

Inside, visitors are welcomed by soft natural light reflecting off a central water feature and the cool atmosphere within. The interior space is defined by two grand arches made of brick and stone, framing views toward the surrounding farms and mountains. Furniture appears to emerge naturally from the walls and floors, showcasing a compelling blend of materials that captures the eye.

The layout of the activity areas responds thoughtfully to the local climate. Various floors serve distinct functions while offering landscape views that converge into a central gathering space. The living room, kitchen, and dining areas each maintain their own character. Notably, the southwest-facing bedroom on the first floor provides shade for the courtyard below and helps keep the water feature cool.
The size and placement of openings in the structure are carefully designed to optimize natural light, ventilation, and passive cooling, ensuring comfort throughout the year.

Inspired by architect Laurie Baker, the design incorporates a “mouse rack” technique that seamlessly connects bricks, infill panels, brick arches, embedded furniture, and local materials. This approach provides an affordable and eco-friendly construction method, enabling this 2,500 square foot home to be built for just 2,000,000 Indian rupees, while meeting recycling standards for steel, cement, and bricks.
