“In the past, when people’s lives were closely connected with nature, abstraction was naturally and subconsciously achieved. However, living far from nature requires conscious effort to reach abstraction.”
—— Piet Mondrian
Saipan Island is familiar to many—a shining pearl in the Pacific Ocean, nestled within the Northern Mariana Islands. When the warm sea breeze sweeps across the boundary between the Pacific Ocean and the Philippine Sea, the fiery red phoenix flowers burst into bloom, as if ignited by the rhythmic Chamorro dance. The soft white sandy beaches contrast beautifully with the delicate, smooth seven-colored sea, shimmering like blue satin. Bathed in shimmering light, the vibrant colors dazzle. Nestled against mountains draped in tropical vegetation, it’s a paradise on earth.
“Find a beautiful place, then build a house in its heart.”
—— Charles Eames
This project is perched atop the highest peak of Saipan, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It enjoys one of the world’s most stable climates, abundant sunshine year-round, fresh air, crystal-clear blue waters, and breathtaking views of the star-filled sky.

▲ Project Location Map
Saipan Island’s human history spans 2,000 years, and its strategic location has made it a historic battleground. Yet remarkably, the island still preserves its ancient tribes dating back over 500 years. Additionally, it hosts a diverse population from Southeast Asia, China, South Korea, Japan, the United States, Europe, and Latin America—a truly international community. As chief designer Tian Ye observes, “Having endured the ravages of war, Saipan has been reborn like a phoenix rising from Nirvana, and every inch tells the story of rebirth.”
The world constantly evolves, driven partly by creativity that transforms “nothing” into “something.” Equally fascinating is the legacy and expansion of the artistic spirit carried through human history. The formula “red, yellow, blue blocks + geometric lines = Mondrian” is well-known, yet the evolution behind it was no overnight achievement. Mondrian transitioned from an academic realist painter to a pioneer of geometric abstraction, distilling modern art from complexity to simplicity and synthesizing diverse influences into a unique vision.
“Architecture should have a deep connection with the site—a metaphysical, poetic bond.”
—— Steven Holl
Peter Mondrian’s 1921 composition featuring large red planes, yellow, black, gray, and blue elements.
Every designer harbors an artist within, and for many, Mondrian is a spiritual guide. He was a philosopher who saw rectangles in everything. His approach inspires me to pause and observe the world attentively—repeatedly, patiently—until the underlying structure reveals itself. Visiting Saipan in June, when phoenix flowers bloom brilliantly, I saw their fiery red petals glowing with yellow halos, set against a backdrop of blue gemstone waters. This vivid imagery of red, yellow, and blue became my first impression of Saipan, and I incorporated this visual language into the design. It’s a fascinating process.

The process of moving from simplicity to complexity and back again is a common cognitive journey in design. While painting allows for free expression, architecture faces many constraints. This makes understanding spatial structure, proportions, and materials crucial for architects.
“We don’t just build on the mountain; we build a building that belongs to the mountain.”
—— Frank Lloyd Wright
Driving up the mountain from the beach road, lush tropical flowers and fruit trees create a dreamlike passage. Within ten minutes, you arrive at a residence perched on a steep mountainside, blending seclusion with tranquility and a lifestyle deeply connected to nature.

The residence includes a two-story building and an outdoor leisure area—living spaces on one side, with an infinity pool and lounge area on the other. Connecting them is a crystal corridor extending from the second-floor study, designed to maintain visual and spatial continuity while harmonizing naturally with the landscape. Parking is cleverly arranged on both sides, optimizing space and functionality.
The building’s frame is painted white, complemented by expansive transparent glass curtain walls that enhance the sense of openness. Scattered palm tree shadows add a magical play of light and color throughout the space.

“Architecture is not just a shelter; it is a vessel of emotions.”
The ultimate goal of design is to create pleasure and joy. Spanning 1,200 square meters, this home is neutral, stylish, modern, and transparent. A beige palette, inspired by the sea view outside, runs throughout, enhanced by elegant soft fabrics, dark wood accents, and subtle linear details. These elements combine through smart spatial planning and decoration to evoke a minimalist aesthetic. Distinct zones offer diverse living experiences. The interplay of light reveals the delicate textures and colors of materials, enriching the space visually and emotionally. Every moment and every ray of sunshine here is unique, changing with time, allowing inhabitants to experience eternity in stillness.

Undoubtedly, Mondrian was stern, ascetic, pure, detached, and idealistic—transcending the distractions of everyday life. Yet, he also respected the early masters of painting and contemplated the purpose of art, though at times his poetic sensibility felt almost suppressed.
As a new-generation designer, Tian Ye expresses a necessary attitude towards life and spiritual pursuit through his work. While personalization and uniqueness define this generation, they carry deep meaning and substance—not emptiness.
