Which BIM Core Modeling Software Are Included? Pros and Cons of Each Explained

According to incomplete statistics, there are currently over 70 BIM software programs worldwide, with 20 to 30 commonly used in the market. However, not all of these can serve as core applications. Today, the author will discuss which BIM core modeling software series are included and the advantages and disadvantages of each.

1. Autodesk BIM Software Series

According to information from Autodesk’s website, their BIM software suite includes AutoCAD, Revit, 3ds Max, Civil 3D, Ecotect, Navisworks, Inventor, and more. Among these, Revit is the primary BIM software, featuring Revit Architecture, Revit Structure, and Revit MEP. These are object-oriented tools that support 2D and 3D modeling along with color rendering. Revit also manages and adds information according to different lifecycle stages, such as 3D model visualization, clash detection, quantity takeoff, and cost estimation.

Revit offers a user-friendly interface, making it accessible for users new to BIM. It boasts a high degree of parameterization, not only defining object properties but also representing spatial relationships between objects. Revit provides bidirectional associativity, allowing any model modification to automatically update the entire project without manual intervention. Importantly, it integrates seamlessly with other Autodesk software and supports various file formats including RVA, DWG, DWF, DGN, GSM, SKP, IES, SAT, GBXML, HTML, IFC, and TXT, making it one of the most widely used BIM platforms today.

Another key Autodesk product is Navisworks, widely used for 4D scheduling simulations and collaborative integration. Navisworks features model navigation and rendering capabilities, enabling comprehensive BIM model reviews. Its clash detection tool quickly identifies potential conflicts within models. During construction, 3D models can be linked to 4D construction sequences for simulation, including animations for lifting large machinery and equipment. Navisworks can integrate multiple design, construction, and BIM file formats, such as DWG files from AutoCAD, FBX files from 3ds Max, as well as data from Bentley MicroStation, Dassault Catia, Trimble SketchUp, PDF, Microsoft Project, and Excel, facilitating effective clash detection and coordination.

2. Graphisoft BIM Software Series

According to Graphisoft’s website, ArchiCAD offers automatic functions including 3D modeling, section/elevation views, design documentation, parameter calculations, as well as scheme presentations and graphic rendering. In terms of collaboration, ArchiCAD introduced team work grading with the rise of Windows OS and network support. Later, the BIM central server functionality enhanced team collaboration and project management.

Graphisoft also developed BIMx, a 3D viewer app that allows project teams to explore BIM project files created in ArchiCAD on smartphones or tablets anytime. BIMx provides access to component information and basic measurement tools, enabling real-time data integration with on-site applications. ArchiCAD supports IFC file conversion with detailed converters to minimize data loss and errors during exchanges. It lays a strong foundation for subsequent structural, construction, mechanical, and physical analyses, supporting effective multidisciplinary collaboration.

3. Bentley BIM Software Series

As stated on Bentley Systems’ website, Bentley’s BIM software suite is widely used in industrial design sectors like petroleum, chemical, power, and pharmaceuticals, as well as municipal infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, and water conservancy.

Bentley’s ProjectWise is a project collaboration management platform that coordinates data from multiple disciplines. It supports files from various MicroStation modules and interfaces with different BIM software, enabling users to access and share files stored on the ProjectWise server across platforms. Bentley has partnered with Autodesk to integrate the MicroStation Vault plugin in Vault Workgroup versions from 2012 onward, allowing MicroStation users to log into the Vault database for collaboration.

Bentley supports numerous file formats, including DWG, DXF, PDF, 3DS, Rhino 3DM, IGES, ACIS SAT, VRML, Google Earth KML, and SKP. Beyond building complex 3D surface models, Bentley software can define intricate parametric geometric components in formats such as IFC.

4. Trimble BIM Software Series

According to Trimble’s website, Tekla Structures specializes in steel structure design for construction engineering. It supports detailed structural design tasks including conceptual design, detailed steel reinforcement configuration, clash detection, and merged model analysis, while generating accurate quantity lists.

Tekla Structures features an engineering timeline that simulates model changes during project stages, although it does not support surface model construction. It supports file formats such as IFC, CIS/2, DSTV, SDNF, DGN, DXF, DWG, IGES, and STEP. Additionally, Tekla provides an Application Programming Interface (API) that facilitates seamless data exchange and instruction execution between different software systems through numerous functions and subroutines.
