Moonlit Night under a Starry Sky
The Xinjibai House Homestay Group project is situated in Xinji Village, Machong Town, Dongguan City, a typical densely populated suburban rural area in the Pearl River Delta. In Xinji Village, we employ a scattered renovation strategy by restoring abandoned and culturally significant old houses spread throughout the village. This approach creates an open, symbiotic homestay cluster that integrates with local villagers.

An Open and Symbiotic Homestay Cluster Designed in Collaboration with Local Villagers
Traditionally, Chinese rural communities have strictly respected land ownership, which made implementing shared spaces in design a challenge. To address this, within the core cluster of the community, we utilized four adjacent leased houses, removing the walls between them to create a crowdfunded public space. This space combines courtyards, auxiliary areas, hallways, terraces, and other spaces originally belonging to individual houses into a cohesive public area that accommodates new uses.
This approach solves the problem of limited public activity areas in the White House homestay community by establishing a community activity center through BIM design crowdfunding.

Upon project completion, this core cluster naturally evolved into a public space that extends throughout the entire White House community. The White House team has hosted multiple rooftop concerts and barbecue parties in this space. These events attracted not only operators and homestay residents but also elderly and children from the village.
Thanks to this rooftop public space, local villagers have experienced increased interaction with foreign residents, fostering more harmonious relationships. The designer’s vision of a scattered, symbiotic old village renewal and homestay lifestyle has been successfully realized.
