The development and application of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in China has spanned over a decade, evolving from early obscurity to rapid growth. Despite this progress, many challenges remain. Today, we will explore how to effectively promote BIM development in China and what key issues need attention.
In recent years, both public and private sectors in China have actively invested in BIM development and application. However, as BIM adoption increases, a critical question arises: how can owners evaluate and select the most suitable BIM solutions tailored to their specific needs during the planning phase? The classification of BIM applications is an urgent issue in China’s BIM promotion efforts. A clear understanding of expected outcomes helps owners, designers, and construction teams apply BIM appropriately and avoid misguided or ineffective implementation.
Internationally, methods have been proposed to classify and evaluate BIM applications by defining their timing, conditions, implementation methods, and assessing case studies. Similarly, draft guidelines for BIM collaborative operations—both domestically and abroad—outline applicable conditions, expected results, required technologies, resources, and evaluation criteria for various BIM application types in construction projects. This framework aims to minimize incorrect BIM usage in China, assist owners in making informed decisions on BIM adoption, and ultimately increase their willingness to embrace BIM technology.
2. Regularly Hold BIM Benchmark Learning Conferences
To deepen understanding among agencies and manufacturers about BIM integration, relevant departments should not only act as promoters but also organize regular benchmark learning conferences. These events would invite government bodies, owners, design teams, and industry associations who have successfully implemented BIM to share practical case studies across all stages of the building lifecycle.
Such benchmark sessions enable participants to learn from proven BIM applications, identify current challenges faced by various stakeholders, discuss potential solutions, and familiarize themselves with BIM promotion strategies and their effectiveness both in China and internationally. Comparing global BIM development trends through these conferences will play a vital role in advancing BIM technology adoption in China and supporting the research initiatives of institutions like the Ministry of the Interior’s Institute of Architecture.
3. Regularly Analyze Key Obstacles to BIM Promotion Domestically and Internationally
Relevant authorities should actively study and develop strategies based on the current state of BIM application in China. For example, analyzing the development roadmaps and strategic considerations of countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, and Singapore can provide valuable insights.
China’s BIM adoption should be periodically reviewed every 3 to 5 years to track progress at different development stages and to shape effective promotion strategies tailored for both domestic and international contexts.
Currently, the engineering association requires all contractors to include BIM-related information when submitting bids. Efforts are underway to establish a systematic method to analyze this BIM data regularly through the electronic procurement system. Preliminary research suggests that useful data can be divided into two categories: first, the characteristics of projects utilizing BIM technology, and second, the content and nature of contract documents related to BIM applications.
Additionally, data on BIM adoption policies and their effectiveness can be gathered through the procurement system or the project management platform of the engineering association, enabling a more comprehensive evaluation of BIM’s impact.
In summary, how to promote the development of BIM in China and what issues should be considered are crucial questions as the industry moves forward. I hope this article provides valuable insights to everyone interested in advancing BIM adoption.
