Since March, many friends have asked about the BIM exams, especially regarding the classification levels of BIM modelers. Today, I want to clarify the differences between BIM Level 1 and Level 2 modelers. Please note, this overview focuses solely on the national BIM level examination organized by the Chinese Society of Graphic Design.
Difference 1: Title
Many believe that the certificates from the Chinese Society of Graphic Arts and the Ministry of Human Resources and Security are simply labeled as Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3 under the BIM Level Examination. However, the official titles are more specific:
Level 1 Exam Passed: BIM Modeling Engineer
Level 2 Exam Passed: BIM Senior Modeling Engineer
Level 3 Exam Passed: BIM Application Designer
Note: The Level 2 exam is divided into three specializations: architecture, equipment, and structure, so the certificate titles vary accordingly. The Level 1 exam is only available for architecture majors, so its certificate title is simply BIM Modeler. The Level 3 exam is currently not open, so the exact title is not yet known.
Difference 2: Exam Content
I won’t go into much detail about the content of the BIM Level 1 and Level 2 exams here, as I have covered these in several previous articles. Feel free to read those or search on Baidu for more information.

Difference 3: Application Requirements
Registration requirements vary between Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 exams. Please pay close attention to these:
BIM Level 1 Exam Registration Requirements:
1. Education: High school diploma or higher (or equivalent)
2. Qualifications: At least 1 year of continuous experience in BIM modeling or related work; a minimum of 300 hours of training.
BIM Level 2 Exam Registration Requirements:
1. Education: High school diploma or higher (or equivalent)
2. Qualifications: Must have passed the Level 1 exam and completed the recommended 300 hours of training for Level 2; at least 2 years of continuous experience in BIM modeling and application.
BIM Level 3 Exam Registration Requirements:
1. Education: College degree or above in civil engineering or related fields (or equivalent)
2. Qualifications: Must have passed the Level 2 exam and completed the recommended 250 hours of training for Level 3; at least 2 years of continuous experience in BIM design and professional application.
Difference 4: Exam Specializations
BIM Level 1 Exam: Architecture only
BIM Level 2 Exam: Architecture, Equipment Design (Mechanical and Electrical), Structure
BIM Level 3 Exam: Architecture, Structure, Equipment Design (Mechanical and Electrical), Construction, Cost Management
That concludes the explanation of the differences between BIM Level 1 and Level 2 modelers. I hope this article helps clarify these distinctions for everyone!
