My Comprehensive BIM Training Journey: An 800-Word Reflection

I was fortunate to participate in BIM training through work, which gave me a fresh perspective on BIM. Today, I’d like to share My BIM Training Experience (around 800 words). To avoid any appearance of advertising, I will not mention the training institution.

1. Understanding BIM Software Operation

With the rapid development of computer software and hardware, BIM has become an essential tool that supports engineering design. To maximize BIM’s efficiency throughout the entire engineering lifecycle, it is crucial to integrate BIM effectively with engineering design. The goal is to ensure that the benefits gained from implementing BIM—such as improved project quality, shorter construction timelines, and better maintenance—far outweigh the additional costs, including labor and software or hardware expenses. This is a key challenge in promoting BIM adoption.

Many engineers mistakenly view BIM-assisted design as similar to traditional computer programs, focusing solely on automation or information display. However, BIM serves as a central data hub for the entire engineering project development process. The execution of various project phases and the involvement of different disciplines revolve around the BIM model.

Developing a BIM model requires some adjustments compared to traditional methods. For example, BIM-guided design differs greatly from traditional CAD drafting or hand-drawn sketches converted into CAD drawings. There are significant differences in software operation and drawing concepts. From my observations, the BIM software skills of project team members can be a critical factor in a project’s success or failure.

In addition to mastering basic commands, BIM software users must follow standardized workflows and procedures. Without this, the BIM models created cannot effectively support the “full lifecycle” of engineering projects. For instance, issues such as elevation marking of reference floors, monitoring floor lines, copying based on floor lines, ensuring unique component names, and adhering to BIM drawing instructions become problematic.

Models produced without standardized practices often end up serving only one discipline or phase of the project. Other project requirements, like annotating 2D linked contract drawings or generating accurate quantity tables by floor, may require rework later. This highlights the importance of cultivating and standardizing BIM software operation skills.

2. Naming Budget Item Codes and Component Names

Component specifications need to be developed to the LOD 300 level during detailed design. Currently, BIM promotion mainly focuses on project planning phases. However, inconsistencies in budget item codes and names across different plans cause challenges. When implementing each BIM project plan, component specifications must be adjusted individually to align with the project budget book.

This process not only reduces efficiency but also increases the risk of data inconsistencies. Such issues negatively impact the feedback and reuse of engineering information—limiting experience accumulation, cross-project data aggregation, and statistical analysis.

Therefore, it is recommended to adopt a unified project code and naming system for public works. This would allow BIM components to be easily referenced across various project plans, enhancing standardization and significantly reducing design costs.

That wraps up My BIM Training Experience (around 800 words). I hope this article is helpful to everyone!
