What is the material form of faith? This question inspired the DIALOG team to design the St. Joseph Seminary in Edmonton, Alberta. Since 1927, this college has been training Catholic priests in the prairie provinces alongside Newman Theological College.

When the need arose to relocate to the city center, the Archdiocese of Edmonton commissioned DIALOG to design a new seminary and theological college.

Since its opening in September 2010, this striking seminary has become a symbol of the elegant and enduring Catholic faith within the Edmonton community. Perched on a highland overlooking the North Saskatchewan River, it commands views across the entire downtown area.

Father Richard Smith, Archbishop of Edmonton, reflected at the project’s inception: “A hundred years later, the Catholic Church is still pondering.” This concise statement shaped every aspect of the design, inspiring the team to create a timeless seminary that reinterprets the enduring elegance of traditional church architecture with a modern vision.

The design of theological schools deeply connects faith and community. Rooted in history and religious architectural traditions, these institutions provide spaces for learning, prayer, communal activities, and meditation. Simultaneously, they embrace openness and modernity, serving as vital centers linked closely to their surrounding neighborhoods.

This building not only emphasizes sustainability and durability but also respects and complements its surrounding environment. At the heart of the campus lies the chapel, featuring white walls, flowing curves, stained glass windows, and a black sandstone floor, creating a captivating spiritual atmosphere.
The chapel opens outward to a garden that invites nature inside, surrounding a tranquil outdoor meditation space within the bustling urban setting.
