Considering Revit: Key Insights and Applications

Revit is the most widely used BIM software in China, renowned in the industry for its large market share, user-friendly interface, easy operation, strong compatibility, and extensive potential for secondary development. These features have always been the proud strengths of Revit. Today, I would like to share some insights about this software.

The name Revit stands for “revise immediately.” Its development began in 1997, initiated by technical experts who introduced parametric CAD technology into the mechanical CAD market. Within less than a decade, the software transformed mechanical design CAD from a primarily 2D graphics tool into a model-driven industry.

Revit is specifically designed for Building Information Modeling (BIM) and was the first software introduced to the architectural community to support architectural design and document management. Its core technology—building information modeling and a parameterized change engine—enables information creation and management throughout the entire construction lifecycle, beyond just design and optimization. BIM serves as an advanced database infrastructure that meets the data needs of architectural design and drafting teams. Revit extends this data infrastructure to support structural configuration, construction, and on-site design tasks within building projects.

Revit’s architecture-related software is mainly divided into three modules: Revit Architecture, Revit Structure, and Revit MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing integration). The Architecture module focuses on designing the building’s appearance. It can accurately represent the complete spatial appearance of a building, including doors, windows, furniture, and material specifications. This allows users to visualize the building realistically in 3D views or sections. Currently, it is the most widely used BIM software in China.

The Structure module centers on structural design, allowing users to model reinforcements, steel frames, and other components in the building’s 3D model according to set parameters. Crucially, these components can be exported to structural analysis software for evaluation. Additionally, quantity takeoff programs can generate lists of structural materials used, which can then be transferred to Excel for budgeting purposes. This module supports structural analysis and quantity calculations, making it useful for understanding the structure for fabrication and construction enterprises.

The MEP module is dedicated to pipeline design, enabling the modeling of equipment pipelines within building spaces post-design. It provides comprehensive energy-saving building solutions for professionals in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering, including designers and draftsmen. As of now, the latest version of Revit available in China is the 2016 edition, with Revit Architecture and Revit MEP being the most widely used modules.

That concludes today’s overview of Revit. I hope this article has helped you gain a more comprehensive understanding of the software. In fact, another notable feature of Revit is the concept of “Clan” — an aspect I plan to explain in detail in a future article when time permits.
