Once completed, the building is handed over to the owner for use and ongoing upkeep until the end of its service life, when it may be demolished or repurposed.

The architectural designs must be passed down through multiple teams, such as structural engineers and construction crews. Information generated during design will be reused extensively throughout the building’s lifecycle. Therefore, effective sharing and utilization of information across all phases directly impact the project’s progress. This need for information reuse also applies within the architectural design phase itself, where inefficient data reconstruction remains a significant challenge.

Computerization and information management are widely recognized as key strategies to boost competitiveness and productivity in construction. Modern engineering projects are often large and complex, making the effective use of computers and information systems essential. Information management is now considered as critical as managing other project resources.

The goal of information management is to provide managers with accurate data at the right time and place, facilitating smooth project execution. With technological advances and greater computer adoption, more managers rely on digital tools to improve efficiency. However, they still spend considerable time and effort adjusting materials to meet various interface requirements, which can reduce efficiency and increase the risk of errors or omissions.

The construction site is often where problems arise most frequently. Its dispersed and dynamic nature means information flows in from many directions, creating a flood of data that can be difficult to manage effectively.

As a result, the success of a construction project is closely tied to how well information is managed. Clear definitions of data and standards that emphasize accuracy, consistency, and accessibility are essential. These qualities support information integration and sharing, allowing data to be created once and reused multiple times without unnecessary duplication. This approach reduces resource waste, improves efficiency, and ultimately enhances productivity and project outcomes.
