Types of Information Delivered by BIM Software

We know that BIM software contains a vast amount of information, all organized according to specific rules and codes. Today, I will discuss the classification of information provided by BIM software.

Based on the information requirements in construction, elements such as columns, beams, slabs, brick walls, and doors and windows should include at least four types of parameters: geometric parameters, material types, outline codes, and component codes.

Geometric parameters define the size, area, or volume of components, which helps in counting the number of elements accurately. Material types specify the main materials used in the components. Outline codes are useful for linking this information to specific construction standards and specifications. Component codes define the functionality and combinations of components, considering not only design-time functions but also facilitating connections with construction procedures.

During the modeling process of columns, beams, slabs, walls, and doors and windows, all these parameters—geometric data, material types, outline codes, and component codes—are inputted. For example, after entering geometric parameters, the size or volume of building components such as floor slabs, exterior walls, parapets, and terrace walls can be determined. By entering thickness or width values along with the previously generated area data in the model, volume information can be calculated.

The input of material types indicates the building component’s material, such as reinforced concrete (RC) for structural columns. Outline codes allow for the consolidation of building components with the same material and delivery requirements when editing detailed lists. Similarly, component codes enable grouping based on similar functions and assembly methods.

These two types of codes not only unify similar component information but also integrate commonly used construction specifications and data related to functionality and costs within the construction industry through code links within the BIM model.

The above content summarizes the information classification provided by BIM software, as discussed today. Due to time constraints, this overview does not include an in-depth analysis. We apologize for any limitations and welcome everyone to actively contribute and engage in further discussions.
