Exploring the Role of BIM Technology in Rail Transit Development

Rail transit serves as a vital part of a country’s infrastructure and has always attracted significant national attention. In recent years, China’s rail transit system has experienced rapid development, with every advancement profoundly impacting the economy. This includes expansive railway networks, urban underground railways, and fast urban transit systems. Alongside strong government support, a growing number of new technologies have been integrated into rail transit—one of the most notable being BIM Technology. Today, I will discuss the background of BIM technology in the context of rail transit applications.

Track alignment, which encompasses both horizontal and vertical alignment, is fundamental to track design. Traditionally, engineers rely on their experience and expertise to design track alignments using electronic spreadsheets and computer-aided drawing tools. While these methods meet design requirements, they lack a graphical interface for effective communication. Moreover, factoring in various design considerations or adapting to changing requirements often becomes tedious and time-consuming. Fortunately, advances in computer technology now allow complex calculations to be automated. To enhance both the efficiency and quality of track design, decision support systems have emerged as an effective solution for assisting with linear design challenges.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) primarily focuses on generating and managing building data. It employs an object-oriented approach to dynamically model various building components and information, thereby improving information management throughout the entire building lifecycle. Similarly, track alignment data possesses spatial relationships akin to those found in buildings. In fact, the geometric shapes, dimensions, and spatial positions of track components are even more tightly interconnected than those of building elements.

Traditional railway alignment design specifications have been incorporated into design criteria and inspection frameworks to enable automatic compliance checks and system-assisted decision-making. By leveraging the three-dimensional, real-time, and dynamic modeling capabilities of building information models, a track alignment design decision support system can be established that adheres to conventional railway standards. Comparing traditional alignment methods with these decision support systems, the accuracy of alignment is validated through relevant unit route data. This confirms that applying building information models to railway alignment not only simplifies the complexity of traditional approaches but also enhances computer-aided design and decision-making capabilities.
