My Perspective on Building Information Modeling (BIM)

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is often described in various ways—some see it as a technology, others as a management method, and some simply as software. In my view, BIM is a comprehensive tool for integrating information, encompassing all data related to construction projects as well as external factors like the surrounding environment, energy consumption, and geographic information. BIM enables the integration, processing, and visualization of this information, representing the entire lifecycle of a building. Here, I would like to share my understanding of BIM.

The architectural engineering process—from design and bidding to construction and completion—requires extensive collaboration among professionals from diverse fields. The teams involved include the owner, design team, construction team, contractors, subcontractors, and on-site foundation workers. Managing such a large and diverse workforce also demands careful control of investments, schedules, and quality. Therefore, thorough construction scheduling and advance review are essential to ensure smooth progress across different project phases and to foster optimal cooperation and coordination among various engineering personnel and construction units on site.

Currently, most industries related to Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) still rely heavily on 2D paper drawings as the primary means of communication. However, as building heights increase and new innovative engineering products emerge, projects have become more diverse and complex. This complexity requires handling more intricate data, which increases the workload for engineering professionals. Moreover, busy schedules make it easier for paper documents to be misplaced or for data errors to occur during transmission, potentially leading to irreversible construction mistakes or future disputes.

In 2002, Autodesk addressed this challenge by proposing a unified platform where all engineering information and data could be centralized. This platform would allow all building stakeholders to access the same information, ensuring better collaboration, reducing errors, and improving efficiency. This concept became the initial prototype of BIM, and the term itself was officially defined in Autodesk’s BIM white paper released later.

By 2006, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) defined BIM as “a technology based on models and linked to building databases.” This technology applies real numerical data to create virtual design objects, simulates construction processes, and supports design and operation management. Through linking 3D model objects to computer databases, BIM enables building professionals to divide labor, model, collaborate on design, and perform integrated analysis on a single platform—making it a comprehensive process technology.

BIM technology allows realistic building simulations in virtual space by integrating building information through digital modeling, management, and application. This virtual environment facilitates accurate simulations at various stages of a project’s lifecycle, actively coordinating operations, reducing costs and errors, and enhancing quality, efficiency, and safety. It also supports current needs for sustainable development, energy conservation, and carbon reduction in construction.

This overview reflects my understanding of BIM. In China, there is ongoing discussion about how best to integrate BIM into existing workflows. In my opinion, this remains a long journey that requires exploration and hands-on practice. The path ahead is challenging, and I intend to investigate it thoroughly from top to bottom.
