Exploring the Use of BIM Technology in Fire Prevention

Currently, domestic architecture is evolving in a highly sophisticated and complex manner, with numerous high-rise buildings emerging across urban landscapes. Alongside this growth, disaster prevention has become an increasingly critical concern, especially for tall and intricate structures that face new challenges in safety management. Traditional 2D drawings and outdated information transmission methods can no longer effectively handle emergency situations. BIM technology may offer a timely and effective solution. Today, I will explore the application of BIM technology in enhancing fire safety.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) represents a modern approach centered on three-dimensional visualization combined with comprehensive building data from various disciplines. It enables the simulation of buildings through specialized software, providing essential information throughout the construction process. Because BIM incorporates a wide range of building attributes, it helps prevent information loss when different design teams share project plans. However, natural and human-made disasters cannot be entirely avoided, and unexpected incidents may still occur. Employing BIM technology in disaster prevention facilitates a better understanding of each building material’s characteristics and the structure’s load-bearing capacity, while also offering significant advantages for post-disaster assessment and reconstruction efforts.

Geometric and semantic information related to buildings plays a crucial role in fire response management. Nevertheless, there are challenges in integrating this information into geographic environments. Issues include discrepancies between actual building geometry and geographic information models, incomplete semantic data within building models, and limited three-dimensional geographic information. Additionally, fire response calculations rely heavily on geographic information management systems, which demand advanced, comprehensive geographic data and detailed building information. Without such detailed building data, these systems struggle to fully manage critical tasks like indoor navigation during emergencies.

Conversely, when sufficient construction information is effectively utilized within geographic spatial environments, processes such as site selection can be conducted seamlessly through Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Emergency response teams can leverage their existing contingency frameworks and seamlessly switch between various applications and data models within GIS. This integration ensures there are no delays or data gaps when coordinating indoor and outdoor operations.

Experts highlight that BIM provides the necessary level and volume of building information required for the automated management of data. However, they also acknowledge ongoing challenges in converting BIM data for use within geographic spatial environments. This conversion process is key to extracting high-level geometric and semantic information from BIM models. While current research primarily focuses on transferring geometric data, the success of these efforts depends heavily on how effectively semantic information can be represented and utilized in geographic spatial systems.

In summary, the application of BIM technology in fire prevention is promising but not sufficient on its own. To fully realize the benefits of BIM in disaster management, it must be integrated with GIS systems. This combination enhances the effectiveness of both technologies, delivering a comprehensive approach to fire safety and emergency response.
