I am fortunate that my company arranged for me to participate in BIM training. The first time I encountered this innovative construction technology, I was truly amazed. Watching the instructor use software to create fully visible 3D models eliminated the need to painstakingly imagine sectional views, making my work significantly easier. Today, I want to share my understanding of BIM software after completing the training. So, what exactly is BIM software?
BIM software is a versatile tool that extends across various stages: from design planning and license application to building management and asset operation. It offers a BIM-based workflow that simplifies the modeling process for complex structures and automates the generation of related documentation. The collaborative workflow within BIM software allows project teams to vividly present models to clients right through to project completion.
Building Energy Assessment
In today’s global movement toward sustainable environmental protection, architects share a common philosophy when making decisions about construction projects. BIM software supports this vision by providing continuous, “green” solutions for sustainable and eco-friendly design. Many BIM platforms come equipped with built-in energy assessment engines, internationally certified by StruSoft VIPcore. This technology empowers architects to deliver accurate energy estimates early in the design phase, supporting multiple thermal energy zones. Input data and evaluation results can be exported in various formats such as PDF, XLS, and IFC, enhancing communication and documentation.
Advanced Deformation Tools
Many BIM applications feature transformation tools that allow users to manipulate complex surface shapes freely using push-pull modeling functions. These tools automatically calculate the area and volume of each floor according to design requirements, aligning with building permit area calculation standards. Additionally, they generate detailed calculation spreadsheets and provide interactive volume graphics, catering to architects’ early-stage design needs.
Real-Time 3D Section Cutting
BIM software enables real-time display of section cuts from multiple directions within a 3D environment. Users can view various 3D sectional perspectives or convert them into 3D plan views, fully showcasing architectural creativity and design intent.
Hardware Enhancements for Optimal BIM Performance
BIM software runs efficiently on both Microsoft® Windows and Mac® OS X 64-bit systems. Upgrading hardware significantly boosts computing speed and efficiency for architects. Features like background processing, expanded multi-core CPU support, and improved drawing unit performance allow users to handle, navigate, and visualize large, complex models smoothly. Leveraging OpenGL, updated Solid Elements Operations, and other component functions further accelerates model processing, loading, and gallery viewing.
So, what is BIM software? In reality, it offers far more capabilities than described here. Due to time and space constraints, I will not delve into additional examples. However, this BIM training has given me a deeper appreciation for its power and the future direction of the construction industry. Without a doubt, BIM will continue to shape the industry’s evolution.
