Why BIM Technology Is Essential for Interior Design Projects

With the rapid adoption of BIM Technology in traditional construction projects such as infrastructure, rail transit, and housing in China, there is also growing emphasis on its application in landscaping and interior decoration. When it comes to interior decoration, people now care not only about luxury but also the comfort of the designed space. In this article, I will explain why BIM technology is increasingly applied in interior decoration.

Nowadays, interior decoration primarily focuses on the spatial arrangement that enhances personal comfort within an environment. Comfort is determined by both the physical parameters of the space and how people feel within it. Traditional 2D design methods rely heavily on the designer’s experience to allocate and utilize space, lacking comprehensive data analysis. Furthermore, it is nearly impossible to conduct comfort analysis with 2D plans alone.

BIM technology addresses these challenges by creating a 3D visual model that presents the overall spatial conditions and supports detailed data analysis. Starting from a 2D floor plan, BIM converts it into a 3D model, allowing a thorough understanding of indoor layouts, including the placement, usage, and lighting of interior decorations. The main reasons for applying BIM in interior decoration are as follows:

1. Using BIM’s 3D visualization model, designers can grasp the usage of indoor space, the size of each room, and how decorations and lighting harmonize. This visual insight provides a reliable basis for accurate area calculations during layout planning.

2. After decoration, 3D models help identify the location and types of equipment within the space. Since equipment can generate heat or cold, their placement and specifications significantly influence comfort levels and temperature distribution in the environment.

3. Thanks to BIM’s object-oriented features, it is possible to identify building materials and interior furniture components within the model. This information supports calculations such as road stiffness loss, which is important for ensuring network connectivity within the space.

4. BIM software enables simulation and analysis of indoor characteristics, including temperature distribution. It also allows data-driven evaluation of energy consumption (like electricity) and carbon emissions, aiding in making informed decisions about building materials during design and construction.

In summary, the above points highlight why BIM technology plays an important role in modern interior decoration. BIM’s parameterization and digital capabilities significantly enhance design quality and execution. Moreover, by considering carbon emissions during construction, BIM promotes greener interior decoration solutions while improving living comfort.
