Comparing BIM and Traditional 2D Design Methods

Today, I would like to explore the differences between BIM and traditional 2D design. The construction industry stands apart from general livelihood industries due to its massive allocation of resources such as personnel, machinery, materials, and capital. Moreover, its influence extends to political, economic, and social levels, earning it the title of the “locomotive industry.” Effectively managing project information in real time is crucial for risk assessment, realizing benefits, and successfully completing missions. This factor often determines the success or failure of a project. Consequently, industries, governments, and academia alike have dedicated significant effort to advancing project information management technologies. As a result, numerous concepts and technologies related to information processing, integration, and project modeling have emerged, among which BIM technology has gained widespread attention.

Traditional architectural design follows a linear process, typically presented in 2D formats. The workflow—from architecture and civil engineering to structural design, construction, and finally operation and maintenance—is mostly sequential. When changes occur in the drawings, it requires updates across elevations, sections, and detailed drawings. Due to delays in obtaining updated drawing data, accurate quantity takeoffs become difficult, leading to deficiencies in both execution and management.

BIM involves files that share consistent, computable digital information. Simply put, a Building Information Model can be seen as a digital 3D geometric representation of a building. Each physical component within this model contains detailed information about the building or engineering project, providing a solid foundation for calculations, analysis, and database management. This enables other software programs to analyze and utilize the data effectively, enhancing inspection of the building’s structure, mechanical and electrical systems, and spatial organization.

Additionally, BIM supports front-end design processes by assisting in facility asset management and integrating back-end operations, maintenance, and other information workflows. This helps stakeholders understand the current status of each asset, track asset usage, and establish preventive maintenance plans as well as equipment value analysis. In the future, this approach could be widely applied to large-scale public construction projects, enabling more efficient control and management of various building facilities.

The use of BIM in architecture supports architects by providing design information such as spatial data, structural dimensions, and basic quantities of design elements. During the construction phase, BIM can be linked with scheduling tools like Microsoft Project or Primavera Project Planner, and combined with virtual construction software such as AUTODESK NavisWorks and Vico Software for simulation of project scheduling. Generally, the period from architectural design to construction completion spans only a few years. However, maintaining sustainable operation, maintenance, and management of building facilities after completion is a task that can last decades or even centuries. The concept of integrating BIM model information from the design phase through to the statistics and maintenance of facilities and equipment represents a promising new direction for research and development.

That concludes this overview of BIM versus traditional 2D design. I hope this insight proves helpful to everyone.
