A Comprehensive Study of BIM Implementation in China

Today, I would like to discuss BIM and its application in China. The concept of BIM has been present in China for over a decade. Initially, it was largely overlooked, but in the past two years, it has gained significant popularity. This shift reflects the construction industry’s growing understanding, moving from a superficial awareness to a deeper comprehension.

In the past, architects typically referred to 3D design drawings created with tools like 3ds Max, Rhino, or SketchUp. These drawings primarily focused on the building’s exterior, lacking detailed internal information such as structural components and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. Today, however, 3D-BIM design drawings incorporate architectural, structural, and MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) elements, providing a comprehensive representation of the building.

The application of BIM generally involves three stages: modeling, clash detection, and optimization. Currently, in China, it is rare for designers to use BIM tools directly for design. Modeling involves converting 2D design drawings—typically composed of flat lines—into 3D-BIM drawings made up of three-dimensional components. This process, often called “model flipping,” is a common computer operation in construction engineering practice.

Currently, many design and modeling engineers lack hands-on experience, and some detailed information from 2D drawings remains unexpressed. As a result, the modeling phase often suffers from issues such as misinterpretation, omissions, and redundancies.

Clash detection involves verifying the accuracy and feasibility of the design or construction information represented in the 3D-BIM model. This task is performed by various project stakeholders, including owners, architects, structural engineers, MEP engineers, HVAC specialists, fire protection engineers, landscape architects, construction contractors, and project management teams.

The optimization phase follows clash detection and focuses on proposing improved design or construction solutions based on the issues identified.

All three stages—modeling, clash detection, and optimization—require substantial professional experience to fully leverage BIM’s integrative capabilities. Therefore, relying on engineers without sufficient practical expertise can lead to unreliable results. Furthermore, during clash detection and optimization, if the project’s contracting and management mechanisms are not well designed, stakeholders may prioritize their own interests, undermining BIM’s collaborative potential.

To enhance the effectiveness of BIM management and implementation strategies, China should combine theoretical knowledge with successful domestic and international practical experiences. Developing comprehensive educational materials that cover the conditions and strategies necessary for building information modeling and management will help improve the BIM capabilities of local enterprises.

Additionally, the author believes that in China, the emphasis on BIM application should not be limited to modeling or software use alone. A strong theoretical foundation is equally important. Government agencies and industry sectors should also highlight this perspective in their promotion and advocacy efforts. Only by shifting our mindset can BIM applications gain the recognition they deserve.

That concludes my discussion on the exploration of BIM application in China. I hope this information proves helpful to everyone.
