Types of BIM Software and Their Future Development Prospects

Today, we will discuss the types of BIM software and the future development prospects of BIM. Currently, there are numerous BIM software options available on the market. According to the classification criteria set by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), these can be divided into eight main categories:

1. Preliminary Design and Feasibility Tools: Primarily used for early design stages and 3D model review.

2. BIM Authoring Tools: Mainly for modeling architecture, mechanical and electrical engineering, structural components, fire protection, roads, bridges, and infrastructure.

3. BIM Analysis Tools: Used for structural analysis, mechanical and electrical systems, building performance, sunlight simulation, model inspection, and validation.

4. Shop Drawing and Fabrication Tools: Focused on creating and producing detailed construction drawings.

5. Construction Management Tools: Designed for collision detection, collaboration, construction planning, and management.

6. Quantity Takeoff and Estimating Tools: Used for calculating project quantities and budget estimation.

7. Scheduling Tools: Dedicated to project scheduling and timeline management.

8. File Sharing and Collaboration Tools: Facilitating file distribution, storage management, information sharing, and collaborative workflows.

Dr. He Guanpei from our country further categorizes BIM software by profession and project phase as follows:

1. Architecture: Including building model creation, visual design, and geometric modeling.

2. Structure: Covering structural modeling, analysis, and detailed design.

3. Electromechanical: Encompassing electromechanical modeling and analysis.

4. Construction: Including collision detection, 4D simulation, and quality control.

5. Others: Such as green energy design and analysis, lighting analysis, and cost analysis.

6. Facility Management (FM)

7. Product Data Management (PDM)

Many experts agree that the future development trends and prospects of BIM are highly promising. As BIM adoption becomes widespread, the following outcomes are expected:

1. Owners will have excellent and reliable options regarding quality, schedule, and cost.

2. Designers will see increased productivity and be able to provide high-quality design services throughout the construction phase.

3. Construction companies will enhance their competitive edge by developing BIM capabilities both in the office and on-site.

4. Stronger collaboration between designers and contractors will be established through engineering contracts.

5. Civil engineering and architecture schools are integrating BIM into their curricula, leading to broader adoption.

6. Government agencies may implement more democratic and transparent online review processes.

7. Although BIM will reduce the reliance on traditional construction drawings, these will not disappear entirely.

8. BIM software will continue evolving toward greater integration, specialization, and informatization.

9. Significant breakthroughs are expected in model analysis, simulation, and workflow processes.

That concludes our overview of the types of BIM software and the development prospects of BIM. We hope this article has been helpful!
