As many know, Revit is currently one of the leading BIM software platforms in China. Its powerful features and user-friendly interface have encouraged more enterprises to adopt it for their projects. However, Revit is not just a single piece of software. Today, I will discuss which Revit series software BIM is applied to during the design phase.
1. Autodesk Revit
Revit is a mainstream design software built around the BIM concept, where all information originates directly from the 3D model. This means that any changes made to detailed plans, whether vertical or horizontal sections, actually update the 3D model itself. As a result, it achieves the goal of “update once, update everywhere,” effectively reducing human errors that commonly occurred during design revisions and drafting in the past.
For HVAC and plumbing design, Revit offers convenient tools to create 3D equipment and piping layouts, as well as generate related diagrams and details. It can also produce pressure loss reports, automatically calculate pipe dimensions, and assist in automatic routing design. Regarding electrical system design, it supports drawing various electrical components such as lighting, telecommunications, fire protection equipment, as well as physical elements like cable trays and conduits. Additionally, it provides design assistance features like circuit creation, distribution panel load schedules, and load balancing.
Starting with the 2016 version, Revit began integrating with Autodesk Fabrication’s mechanical and electrical equipment design and manufacturing solutions. This integration allows users to create more precise MEP component models and export Revit MEP models to Autodesk Fabrication software. This facilitates the production of CNC (Computerized Numerical Control) fabrication drawings, inspection lists, and other documentation needed for manufacturing and construction.
2. Autodesk Dynamo
When it comes to open-source plugins for Revit, Dynamo often reminds users of Rhino’s Grasshopper. However, since Rhino primarily focuses on designing complex geometric shapes, its modeling approach differs fundamentally from Revit’s component-based 3D modeling. Therefore, Dynamo excels in intelligently configuring building components, defining constraints, importing and exporting Revit model data via Excel, and calling Revit APIs using Python scripting. This enables advanced customization and automation even for users without a programming background.
3. Autodesk Navisworks
The essence of BIM is to integrate various disciplines, multiple models, and applications across different levels. To manage this, a review platform software is necessary to aggregate models for comprehensive review, analysis, simulation, and coordination. This supports design and construction professionals in clash detection, interference management, and early problem prediction and resolution before construction begins. Navisworks is one of the leading BIM review platforms. Besides reviewing 3D models, marking up with redlines, and creating clash animations, its most renowned feature is clash detection during the design phase.
During construction, Navisworks can combine 3D models with project schedules to simulate 4D construction sequences. It also enables the creation of construction animations for large machinery and equipment lifts. This helps coordinate various disciplines, resolve conflicts, and plan projects more effectively throughout both design and construction stages, maximizing the value of BIM data.
That covers which Revit series software BIM is applied to during the design phase. I hope this article has been helpful to everyone!
