Busy Holiday Construction: Pouring Three Piles During the Dragon Boat Festival

Chongqing News (Correspondent Hu Tianyou) — Although today is the Dragon Boat Festival, the Chongqing Guizhou Expressway Capacity Expansion Project site, managed by the First Branch of China Railway 18th Bureau, remains vibrant with activity. Workers and machinery are in full swing, with builders working overtime and sweating through the day to complete a key milestone: the successful pouring of the first pile foundation for the Tuanshanbao Bridge. This achievement lays a solid foundation for the next phase—erecting beams and channels along the entire route.

The Chongqing Guizhou Capacity Expansion Project spans Banan District, Qijiang District, and Wansheng District in Chongqing before extending into Guizhou Province. This route serves as an important corridor connecting Chongqing and Guizhou. Once completed, it will significantly boost economic development in the Chongqing-Guizhou region, playing a crucial and far-reaching role. The Tuanshanbao Bridge, constructed by the project team, is designed to cross ditches and manage floodwater discharge. The site presents complex geographical challenges—two mountains flank a valley, with steep terrain, dangerous roads, and difficult access for large machinery and materials. Since mobilizing at the site, the project team has proactively tackled these obstacles by developing innovative solutions, strategic plans, and carefully organizing scientific construction methods to create favorable conditions for the bridge’s successful completion.

The Tuanshanbao Bridge is a continuous structure stretching 369 meters in total length. The tallest bridge pier reaches approximately 58 meters, which adds complexity and heightened safety concerns during construction. Its foundation consists of pile foundations, with 63 piles totaling 1393 linear meters. The 9th abutment features a column abutment design, while the 0th abutment uses a rib plate abutment. Piers 1 through 5 and pier 8 are cylindrical, pier 6 is a rectangular hollow pier, and pier 7 is a rectangular solid pier. The columns of piers 6 and 7 are built using hydraulic climbing formwork. The superstructure employs prestressed concrete (post-tensioned) T-beams, with a total of 126 beams.

During the Dragon Boat Festival, a fierce effort was made in both Chongqing and Guizhou to pour the first pile. Today, the project team not only completed the first pile foundation successfully but also poured two additional piles. In total, over 180 cubic meters of concrete were poured, marking a strong and promising start to the bridge construction.
