What Is the Average Monthly Salary of a BIM Engineer?

How Much Does a BIM Engineer Earn Monthly?

I’ve discussed this topic with many young professionals before. With the growing emphasis on BIM applications at both national and local levels in recent years, the role of a BIM engineer has become widely discussed—salary being the most common question. Today, I want to share some real-world insights based on my experiences.

Previously, I addressed the question What is the annual salary for a BIM engineer? In that article, BIM engineers were categorized into three levels with corresponding salaries. Here, I’ll provide a more detailed breakdown. In fact, many roles often referred to as BIM Engineer don’t fully fit the title. For clarity, I’ll unify the categories for a comprehensive overview:

1. Construction Site BIM Technicians

These individuals are more accurately described as skilled workers rather than engineers—this is not a derogatory term. Many are self-taught and often perform repetitive tasks such as mold flipping on construction sites. Their work is largely mechanical and lacks innovation, leading to low wages and limited benefits. Typically, they earn around 3,000 yuan per month, and only the most skilled and fast workers might reach 5,000 yuan, which is quite rare.

2. Office-Based Entry-Level BIM Staff

These employees work in office environments but still perform mold-related tasks daily. Usually recent college graduates or individuals with one to two years of experience, they have received some formal education or technical training but are not yet proficient. They assist technical staff by handling repetitive tasks assigned to them. Their salaries usually hover around 4,000 yuan per month.

3. BIM Consultants

This group is generally entrepreneurial. Many have experience working on projects at large companies before branching out to form BIM consulting firms with partners. They possess strong technical skills, often serving as key technical experts in their previous roles. Their income depends heavily on project availability and personal networks, making monthly earnings variable. When projects are abundant, they can earn well; during slower periods, income tightens. On average, monthly earnings are about 8,000 yuan.

4. BIM Trainers

As the name suggests, these professionals teach BIM at various training institutions. They can be divided into two categories:

1. Full-time trainers: Their income mainly depends on the number of teaching hours. With daily rates ranging from 1,500 to 2,500 yuan, a trainer working at least eight days a month can earn between 12,000 and 20,000 yuan monthly. Note that trainers employed directly by schools may have different salary structures.

2. Part-time trainers: These trainers usually have other jobs and teach only when the institution requires them. Their income varies widely since they may also engage in consulting or project work independently. However, earning at least 20,000 yuan per month is not uncommon for this group.

5. Professional BIM Engineers

These are typically graduates with strong technical expertise and significant project experience—many former consultants fall into this category. They hold key positions within companies, influencing both technical decisions and management strategies. More than just technical experts, they often participate in project management and can be seen as BIM project leaders. Their monthly salaries usually exceed 30,000 yuan and can be even higher.

To summarize, how much a BIM engineer earns per month varies widely depending on the role and experience level. I hope this breakdown helps clarify the current landscape. I want to emphasize that this is not meant to belittle or glorify any particular role, but rather to provide clear insight into each position’s status and potential career paths.

If you want to avoid drifting aimlessly in your career, it’s essential to set goals and work toward them. I encourage everyone to have a clear vision for their future development in the BIM field!
