Understanding the Application of BIM Technology

Let’s discuss the Definition of BIM Application. Currently, both domestic and international communities have shown great interest in this topic, yet there are very few studies focused on clear definitions. Terminology and definitions remain inconsistent at this stage.

In foreign countries, BIM applications are often referred to as BIM Uses. However, in China, there is no unified term for BIM Uses, and its definition and function are still unclear. To clarify and make it easier for users to understand, after reviewing relevant domestic literature, the term BIM Uses has been translated as “BIM Applications” (hereinafter referred to as BIM Applications).

According to relevant studies both locally and internationally, BIM application refers to the use of BIM technology to assist in analyzing or planning facilities/buildings during project execution, with the goal of achieving specific objectives. For instance, BIM technology can be applied in structural analysis, cost estimation, or asset management to reduce operational and lifecycle costs.

To provide a clearer understanding of BIM applications, the author has compiled various definitions and terminologies proposed by different organizations and experts. This is intended to offer users a broader perspective on the Definition of BIM Application:

Authors: Ralph G. Kreider and John I. Messner

A BIM Use is defined as a method of applying Building Information Modeling during a facility’s lifecycle to achieve one or more specific objectives. (Ralph G. Kreider and John I. Messner, 2013).

In other words, it is a method of using building information modeling technology to accomplish one or more specific goals throughout the lifecycle stages of a facility.

A BIM Use is described as a method or strategy of applying Building Information Modeling during a facility’s lifecycle to achieve specific objectives. The BIM Uses at this stage of the planning process are identified based on goals and objectives. (Computer Integrated Construction Research Program, 2013)

This can be translated as a method or strategy of using building information modeling technology to reach one or more specific goals throughout a facility’s lifecycle. The lifecycle of BIM Uses is a process planned according to goals and objectives.

Author: BIM Research Center, National Taiwan University

The use of BIM is defined as a method and strategy of applying building information modeling throughout the lifecycle of building facilities to achieve the stated BIM goals. (National Taiwan University BIM Research Center, 2015)

Authors: Yu Wende, Zheng Shaocai, Lai Chaojun

BIM application aims to specify the methods adopted by BIM service providers on behalf of owners to achieve BIM goals, standardize the BIM work required in BIM projects, and define necessary BIM deliverables. (Yu Wende, Zheng Shaocai, Lai Chaojun, 2016)

Currently, there are numerous complex BIM applications both domestically and internationally. Without a set of BIM applications tailored for domestic construction projects, owners may struggle to select the right BIM applications and effectively utilize BIM technology.

That concludes our discussion on the Definition of BIM Application. I hope this article helps you better understand the topic!
