Is BIM More Than Just Software?

Is BIM just software? The editor believes that BIM encompasses three key layers of meaning, with a particular focus on the “M” at the end.

1. Modeling is a dynamic process, emphasizing that BIM is fundamentally based on the building lifecycle. This lifecycle is divided into multiple stages, and each stage requires the creation of one or more models to describe and guide the entire construction process of the building.

2. Model refers to the individual models created at each stage of the modeling process, as well as the final comprehensive model.

3. Management relates to managing both the modeling process itself and the resulting objects, such as the models.

While BIM certainly requires software to be implemented, the software involved spans many categories, covering the entire lifecycle from planning to the end of the building’s life. Each stage typically uses at least one specialized software tool, including BIM modeling software, electromechanical analysis software, comprehensive collision detection software, cost analysis software, sunlight analysis software, structural analysis software, MEP software, and more.

So, is BIM just software? After reading this explanation, you should be able to form your own understanding. Moving forward, you can select the BIM software that best fits your specific application needs.
