Recently, someone asked which projects are suitable for BIM technology and whether BIM is only applicable to highly complex projects. I would like to share my personal perspective on this matter.
There are seven key factors to consider when deciding if BIM should be applied to a new project and to what extent. These factors are:
- Does the project involve complex components or parts?
- What is the type and scope of the project?
- Does the project require intensive operation and maintenance management?
- Is the project of high significance or importance?
- Are there other factors that support the use of BIM?
- Is there a high potential for BIM reuse?
- What is the BIM capability level of the project organizer?
Based on these seven factors, the appropriate BIM application strategy for each project typically falls into one of the following three categories:
- Comprehensive BIM implementation across the entire project
- Targeted BIM application for specific disciplines or functions
- BIM use as an optional tool depending on project needs
