The key to advancing the application of BIM technology lies in encouraging users to adopt BIM-based workflows to the greatest extent possible, depending on the technology’s suitability. Moreover, collaboration among all project participants is essential, with multiple stakeholders ideally adopting BIM practices together to maximize effectiveness.
There are two primary challenges in this process. First, the availability of appropriate BIM application software plays a critical role. While the range of BIM software covering major tasks throughout a building’s lifecycle is expanding, it still falls short of supporting most practical work. A significant issue is the software’s ability to support local standards. For instance, even BIM software developed by multinational companies may lack compliance with regional regulations. In China, the BIM software currently available mainly includes architectural design tools and 4D applications, which are not closely aligned with regulatory requirements.
Second, the presence of relevant BIM standards, particularly data exchange standards, is crucial. The Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) standard, widely accepted as the mainstream BIM data exchange format, is gradually maturing and gaining support from many software developers. However, China has yet to establish a corresponding national standard. During the “Eleventh” and “Fifteenth Five-Year Plans,” the Chinese government supported research projects addressing these challenges through the Science and Technology Research Program and the Science and Technology Support Program. These initiatives laid the groundwork for BIM adoption in China’s construction sector, but further support remains necessary to fully meet application demands.
Given these circumstances, it is important that application units not only make their own efforts but also collaborate closely with research institutes and universities. This joint approach will help overcome the current bottlenecks in BIM technology implementation, enabling more effective use and higher levels of adoption.
