Based on the experiences of numerous BIM design consulting projects conducted across China in recent years, design institutes that have adopted BIM can generally be categorized into the following types:
1. Early Adopters: These are design institutes where a few insightful individuals first recognized the advantages of BIM. They aim to leverage BIM to gain a competitive edge in design and innovation.
2. Adaptable Design Institutes: These organizations encounter challenges that traditional drafting tools cannot resolve, such as collaborative design of large-scale projects, complex and irregular building structures, or green building analysis requirements. As a result, they turn to BIM technology to address these difficulties more effectively.
3. Demand-Driven Adopters: Some design institutes adopt BIM in response to client requirements or to collaborate with foreign partners. For example, developers like the Swire Group and the Shanghai Center Project mandate BIM usage. Additionally, foreign design firms often require Chinese design institutes to use BIM during scheme design or preliminary phases. Although this demand is not yet widespread throughout China, an increasing number of real estate developers are starting to recognize BIM’s value and are actively promoting its implementation, making it a growing trend.
