Have you ever wondered which software skills, licenses, or certifications are required to land a job at one of the world’s top 50 construction companies? Our research provides the answers…
We analyzed 928 job positions across the leading 50 construction firms worldwide. Using construction records from the top 300 companies as of July 2013, we compiled the essential software skills and license/certification requirements for each role. These were then categorized by average experience levels: 0–3 years, 4–10 years, and 11–20+ years.
The findings are summarized in the chart below:
In brief, over 70% of construction roles require proficiency in Revit, while more than 50% still demand AutoCAD skills. SketchUp accounts for only 3% of software skill requirements. Notably, Grasshopper skills are needed in just 3% of roles, which is disappointing but not entirely unexpected. Traditional manual sketching skills are required in only 4% of the positions.
Our data indicates that the demand for software skills generally decreases as experience increases. In other words, entry-level positions require more software proficiency. Exceptions include AutoCAD and Photoshop, where the gap between requirements for 0–3 years and 11–20 years of experience exceeds 20%. Revit follows with a 14% difference.
Interestingly, only 10% of jobs require a license or certification, whereas 25% specifically ask for LEED certification. License and certification requirements rise with experience, meaning less experienced candidates typically face fewer such demands.
Below is the list of companies included in our survey. We focused on the top 25 construction firms and the top 25 construction engineering companies.
The survey primarily targets large enterprises. We are eager to extend this research to smaller firms as well. If you know of reputable smaller architecture companies to include, please share your suggestions in the comments below.
